I am curious as to what means people have gone through to keep their garage's tolerable in the summer to work in. Living in Arizona my garage is a toasty 95 degrees through the summer and a small swamp cooler isn't cutting the mustard.
Post up what solutions you have done to make your garage livable during the summer with pictures if you have them.

Mine has a central air vent in the garage. It is great, it is 100 degrees outside and 68-70 degrees inside. |

The back of the garage at our old house used to face the garden, which was not really visible from the backyard. So we cut a hole in the garage, framed it like a window, and permanently mounted a window-style A/C unit. We left it in year round and it was never a problem. Just put the pegboard up right around it. Kept the garage nice and cool. Be sure to insulate, or it will never get comfortable in there. That garage had heat, too.
No A/C in the new garage. |

Wow.. AC in a garage - that would be great!
Today was 99, high humidity.
I am curious now too: who has one, then? |

I hate you!!!
To be honest I am thinking the same thing. Get a quote or two to install central air in it. Its already insulated top, side, etc and sheet rocked. I have looked at Lowes, Home Depot for portable a/c units and they look weak for $500.
My latest strategy is to buy a good window unit for $200 that will cool the entire garage and mount it inside hooking a duct up to it for the hot air to go outside. There are already vents cut out in the wall. I can't frame a hole due to lovely HOA rules (not that I would do that anyway).
NO, I don't live in my garage...LOL
Other solutions, ideas out there?? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I have one of those in my living room. 10,000 BTU and it does an OK job. My garage on the other hand, has an Avenvger Portable Cooling System, the CAP 30 model.

30,000 BTU's of cooling power. It only cost me $75 at an auction. It came from a state office building and was hardly used. Keeps my work area down to 75 or so. That's with an uninsulated ceiling. It vents out through a window. I can pull the vent out and close the window at night. _________________

In Arizona you have low humidity, so what you really need is a bigger swamp cooler. Get a 4000CFM side draft cooler with a 1/2 HP motor and mount it in a window. With 15% humidity, you can get as much as 30F temperature drop. That'll keep your garage nice and cool.
Remember, you have to have airflow across the space for a swamp cooler to work well. You need to open a door or window on the opposite side of the space from the cooler. Those portable ones that sit in the middle of the work area don't work well because they don't draw fresh air.
You really don't want your garage to be tight enough for effective air conditioning, since you don't want to recirculate all those nasty fumes that you create with gasoline, carb cleaner, etc. Better to flow the air through the space and keep it fresh.
I'm in SoCal, which isn't quite as good for swamp coolers, but I still use one exclusively. Right now we have a rather high 59% humidity and the swamp cooler is still making a 10F drop and putting out 68 degee air.
I have central air, but I seldom run it. It sucks too much electricity.

Notch- THAT'S WHAT I NEED! I wonder what they cost new? $75 at auction, I am so jealous... Thanks for this post!
George, right now it's monsoon season here and brutally humid (for Arizona). The swamp cooler does not work at all right now. Agree with your thoughts about fumes but I could easily go outside to spray. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

| Wait until October, the crackheads will be selling their window A/Cs for next to nothing on Craigslist. Pick one up then. |
