I recently got a '57 Single Cab with some funky velour front bench upholstery. Is there anybody repoping the smooth black stuff that is supposed to be on there? I have searched around online, TMI, WW, Samba Forums and can't find it anywhere. Is this available?

as far as I know there is nobody actively selling it. I have heard rumours of people finding the material though. Its quite different from the vinyl tmi, sewfine etc have because it seems less strectchy and sticky. See if a local upholstry shop has something close.

i dont know this personally, but i have heard lennys material was not correct. there are sources for modern vinyls that match,i think it is golf, cabriolet top material. its very pricey also. try this

this is what duncan http://www.eurobox-vw.com/ sells. it looks identical and i have heard it is pretty dead on.

again, i dont know for a fact on lennys stuff, just what i have heard from others who have seen or got samples.

I've also heard some Jaguars use the same material?

I'm assuming that would also be quite expensive.

Your 57 should have black, no piping.

Last I talked with lenny, he only had the black with the correct pebble pattern for barndoor (which is technically different than what you need). I have found almost identical pebble matches for the black at local upholstery shops. You just have to go look. Most black stuff is 'grained' instead of 'pebbled' like the pebble picture above. That is a good pic to print out and take with you on your search.

Does anyone make and sell a correct dark grey upholstery kit (w/o piping) to re-cover the front bench seats in a 1959 Panel or both benches in a '59 Double-Cab? The kit WW sells is much too light a grey color? Know what I'm talking about?

I dont think anyone has found anything perfect yet. I did find some material that is very close in color, but the grain is not quite as coarse. It works until I find something exact or get original seats.

Lenny's early black material isn't quite correct - the texture is a little off and kinda faint. The grey (at least what he sold me for my '60 panel) was even less close - hardly any texture at all. Don't get me wrong - the covers are very nice - but they're not 100%

I'd expect them to be for $300. Covers for a 60 seem to be a major hurdle for the "industry" to figure out. If it's not the patterns themselves it's the material thouigh I think they all tell you they are correct.

I have a 60 Double cab that needs a rear seat redone in dark grey. The front seat is perfect I took it out of a 60 panel and it matches what the rear seat has left. I am also looking to find something really close to original so that they are the same.

It's hard to believe that with as many dark grey seats in buses as there are out there that the TMI light grey covers that WW sells are all that is available. The shades of grey are WAY off. If I don't find good covers, I might have to resort to removing the originals and tediously re-stitching up the original covers (not torn but the seam thread let go). What we need has got to be out there somewhere?

my 58 single still had part of the original upholstery on the bench, and it was black pebbled, which yours should have. I believe they used this from the barndoors up to somewhere around the 58/59 transition, and then went to the grained.

I asked for a sample of the material for Lenny about 3 months ago and never received anything.

I don't need something exact for my truck.. i just want it close. Anything has to be better than the velour I have now.
