|
|
I need help diagnosing this sound.
Loud clunk from rear.
Clunk occurs over bumps in road when clutch is engaged.
Clunk disappears over bumps in road when clutch is released.
Mild clunk when clutch pedal is depressed quickly.
Louder clunk when clutch pedal is released quickly.
No clunk when engine isn’t running.
Newly replaced pressure plate, very firm.
Newly rebuilt reduction boxes.
Older transmission.
New transmission mounts, examined and perfect
Clunk not made by muffler or other part hitting bus.
Shocks and lug bolts tight.
Nice bend in Bowden tube.
Thank you for your help, Eben |

Thanks for the reply.
I pulled the engine after the problem occured.
The throw out bearing looked good, and it does match the clutch cover. |

Thanks Barry. I'll check them tomorrow.
Can anyone else think of something I should check? |

| Worn out fulcrum plates and/or shovel end of the axles will make a clunking sound but only when the clutch pedal is released and the bus just begins to accelerate in first or second gears, so that may not be it. |

Thank you, Barry.
Thank you for reading my description of my driveline clunk problem carefully.
You hit the nail on the head.
The noise was caused by loose spring-plate bolts.
I have had this problem for a month and at least a dozen long time VW guys missed the cause. |

Shit, just read through this whole thread and was thinking that the whole time. I used to have a '66 Sundial years ago and the previous owner had told me that the trans made a nasty clunking noise and he was positive that it was just slop in a high mileage trans to blame. I got under the Bus with a ratchet and had the problem fixed in less than 5 minutes. The trans was awesome. _________________ Please check us out on Instagram at @holygrailgarage

So glad I found this thread, I thought that my mounts had gone bad or worse that my transmission would need some expensive work. So i made my way out to the garage to check and sure enough loose bolts on the spring plates. Tightened them up, now no more "cluncking" noise! |
