|
|
Just a few more things to do and I've completed the replacement of my westy floor.
The original floor was absolutely nasty - found a ton of garbage under the closet and z-bed (coins, leaves, old postcards with stamps from 1975, an old pair of eyeglasses and a ton of dirt).
I used 1/8 inch Baltic Birch 5x5 sheet (Elmo's building supply in Tigard, Oregon), got a piece of commercial vinyl from local carpet store, got vinyl adhesive from home depot. New seat pedestals wraparounds and mats from bus depot. Took a bit of time for me to do this but well worth it. A word of advice if you are planning on doing this - label and bag your hardward when disassembling and removing your "furniture" - it could be easy to not know what bolt/nut/screw to put where.
Here are the pictures (if anybody can pm me and let me know how to post the actual picture instead of a link, that will save all of you an extra click next time- sorry guys ). I'll post a final photo when I get the fixtures installed.

I like that you used a material that keeps it looking near original. It looks great!! _________________ "Want a little peace of mind, grab the lowest branch and start to climb"

Looks great!
What did you use to attach the rubber around the seat pedestals? _________________ ~Jeremy (and Jessica)

Hi,
Nice job, very clean indeed!
Does the 1/8" ply provided enough stiffness when layed over the cargo bay's ridges?
How did you attach the seat wrap-arounds? By spray adhesive? I bought similar ones and have not yet installed them.

For the adhesive, I used Permatex weatherstrip adhesive (don't know if that was a good choice or not but it seems like it has stuck so far) I've heard a lot of people have used the spray adhesive and that is probably a better idea since you would get better coverage that way.
Simon66 -My floor had a piece of 1/2 inch plywood as a base between the metal and the 1/8 inch birch and I'm 99% sure that it was originally that way. I reused the 1/2 inch plywood since it was in good shape.
I really tried to match the original as closely as I could - I'm trying to do that with any projects I've done so far (I'm making a vow to take more pictures as I do stuff- I guess I get so excited about working on it that I forget about documenting what I've done)
56 0val -Thanks for the tech tip on how to post a photo ( I'm proof that whoever said there is no stupid question was wrong ) _________________ 1972 Westy 1700cc stock dual carbs |

What you need to use is 3M™ Super Trim Adhesive 08090, 1 lb. 2 oz. Aerosol, 6 cans per case A fast-acting, high-strength, aerosol contact adhesive designed for two-surface application. This adhesive is resistant to heat and plasticizing oils and is excellent for attaching vinyl, insulation, foam, padding and rubber parts to metal and other surfaces. Bonds can be made within minutes of application or as long as one hour later. _________________ "I reject your reality and replace it with my own"

| Thanks, my "seat pedestals wraparounds" are horrible, this would be a nice upgrade. |

I got the wraparounds from Bus Depot, but they have a WW imprinted on them so I imagine you could get them directly from Wolfsburg West and maybe save a couple bucks.
I would go with Dead1's suggestion on the spray adhesive - the permatex I used did not tack up very quickly so I had to keep the pressure on it for a while. To late now, its good and stuck which was the original goal anyway. _________________ 1972 Westy 1700cc stock dual carbs |

|
|
As promised, here are a few pics of the finished floor with all the goodies back in.
I was pretty happy with how it turned out, it was a lot of work because I replaced or refurbished all the wallboards and painted the inside of the cabinets, cleaned and sanitized the water tank in the sink, replaced rotted seat pedestal mats, replaced front floor mat, and a bunch of other little stuff ---dang no wonder it took me so long. Enjoy your week. _________________ 1972 Westy 1700cc stock dual carbs |
