I just bought an 87 Syncro. The guy I bought it from said, "the only reason it won't start is if the solenoid is stuck...just hit the solenoid with a screwdriver and it will start right up." 3 or 4 times in the past 4 months I have had to do exactly that. Sure enough it starts right up. Why does this happen? What do I need to do to fix it? Should I replace the solenoid?
Thanks _________________ '87 Syncro Vanagon |

Sounds like you need a new starter. The solenoids can get worn out and won't engage the starter. A lot of times, as in your case, it is an intermittant condition and a little love tap is all it takes to free it up so it works again. It will probably get more frequent. Buy one of these and you'll be happy.

Beware, doing a starter on a Syncro is a real bitch of a job. The gas tank is right above the starter and removal is really difficult. I would recommend going with a new Bosch unit and waiting until the motor needs to come out, if you can. It is much easier to pull the starter when the motor is out the way.
I had a starter on my '87 Syncro that would work occasionally and installed an additional relay (Ford-type) back at the starter that helped for awhile. Eventually that ended up not working either.
I sold the van with a non-op starter. Fortunately it was easy to pop-start.
