I have a 73 bus. Did it come with a muffler heat deflector? It's item K below:
Do I need one? Where can I get one? I've never seen one!
Thanks,
Jason |

I'm sure your bus did originally. You can't find one new, but I've seen used ones here in the classifieds (try doing a search). one side is attached to one of the tin bolts by the alternator and the other side has a tab that slips between a joint in the tin. I used my old rusted out one as a pattern to make my own out of a piece of galvanized steel from Home Depot. Works just fine. It does keep the heat from the muffler out of the engine compartment. _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

I'm looking for one for my '74. It seems a lot of them have been ripped off over the years with engine removals and not reinstalled. I have a contact who comes accross wrecked buses and lets me pick through them. I am going to search the item out. I'll post if I come up with an extra. I'm not sure about the differences, if any, between years. Maybe Randy or someone will know. |

Hiya,
Any chance folks can share pics of their installed deflectors? I'm interested specifically in 74 and 79's- pretty sure my lower tin is complete (79) but my buddy's 74 is pretty bare overall... thanks!
Merry Friday,
Mike

I purchased a good used one for my '78 last summer from Karl, who frequents the forum. I'd try him first. _________________ Darryl

Here's a pic of mine installed. I was told by my local VW guy "it's there for a reason, put it back on".

Of course with the bumper and the gravel guard affixed you will not be able to see the heat shield. _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

It will reduce your engine bay temperatures, but I can't tell you by how much. When I thought about where the cooling air routed, and where that shield went, I figured it would reduce the temps of the air heading into the engine for cooling. I don't have temp gauges, so I can't tell you how effective it was, but the bus ran great all Summer through the 100+ degree desert.
I got one from Ken at theBusCo just East of Seattle last year about this time. I didn't pay more than $20 for it. Shot it with some hi-temp paint, pulled the exhaust and installed it. Took all of 30 minutes and most of that was getting the exhaust back on _________________ 1972 Westy (hapy):

I did not need to pull the exhaust to install mine, just the gravel guard. _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

How could you possibly install the heat shield without removing the muffler? Is it a stock muffler? _________________ '77 Sunroof Bus.

Stock muffler (check out picture in my gallery). It just slid it up there, attaching it took a little finesse, but not too difficult. Don't know what else to say, that's what I did! _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

I made the one that is on my 411. All I had were the two mounting brackets left from the old one. Didn't take very long at all. I made it double walled out of galvenized sheet metal and it is quite effective.
If you are missing the heat shield you will fry your foam gasket in short order, once that is gone you will soon be pumping very hot air over you heads. |

Yes, the heat shield came on 72 and up type 4 bus engines.
It started out as part number 021 119 227B.
It ended up as part number 039 119 227.
The shape and length of the left end is different between the 2.
Neither one is available new from VW......
I have one nice one. Most lose the center hole tab where the holddown screw goes up into the center tin. It either rusts off or cracks and falls off. |

I picked this one up a few weeks ago, out of the three located, one was on not rusted beyond repair.
It's now headed to the powdercoater for long life preservation. _________________ ********************************

Those look pretty rough (at least from the the pictures). I would consider fabricating a "new" one, unless you are a purist. _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

I know this is an old thread, but I just pulled this exhaust heat deflector off of my 74. I wanted to add some more pics of the heat deflector since there doesn't usually seem to be a lot of talk about this part. I thought mine was in bad condition until I saw some of these in this post. Maybe mine's not so bad after all. Guess, I just need to get to work stripping it down and then get it powdercoated like Karl did.
Ground side:
Engine side:
Too bad no one makes these since I would think that they would do wonders for preventing the searing heat from the exhaust from rising up to the fan just above it. I know the engine seal is supposed to prevent most of that, but this thing is pretty stout! _________________ "Aircooled VWs are like roaches in that if you let one in, they'll soon be nesting all around you in great numbers."
