|
|
I have a chance to trade a non running, resto needing 73 Noton 850 for a running ready to use Smithy lathe, drill, and mill machine. Unit fits on a large work bench, weighs about 400lbs has all the gears, tools and adapters. Never had a metal lathe but it looks like it will do everything the weekend warrior might need to do. Any thoughts or input? _________________ "One man can make a difference...Jesus did." |

Looks like a good light-duty unit for smaller hobbyist machining jobs.

They're pretty good little machines if they're kept right. Fairly accurate, and great for small parts. Good luck with it!

What are ou going to be doing with it? Its a great machine for doing small metal work but i hope your not planning on making repo vw parts with it? _________________ Arachibutyrophobia- Fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth.

That really is a fair question though. It depends on what you plan on doing with it and do you have any machining experience? Unless you have some experience (or some experienced help), you may end up going through a lot of tooling... $$$. Or you will end up using it only as a drill press and a drill press isn't worth your trade.
You are also going to need some good quality measuring equipment to make any dimensionally accurate parts. If you buy Calipers or Micrometers just remember that you get what you pay for. Good measuring tools aren't cheap. I would recommend Mitutoyo or Starrett. _________________

Smithy, eh? If you just want to machine small bushings with it, I guess it will do. The tolerance on a Smithy is like 0.015 NEW! I would NOT call that accurate.
But hey..maybe start with this and go on to bigger things. Good luck with it. |
