|
anyone done this??
after searching, it apears that the odyssey 680 will crank and run a f/g dune buggy, anybody mounted it up high on the passenger firewall inside?
I'm trying to keep my back seat area clean w/out dropping the battery down over the torsion tube.
http://www.odysseybatteries.com/accessories/pc680hd.htm
the battery is really small in size and still cranks out 680 cca's, I'm pretty sure 350 cca's will start a v dub.
about $100 for the battery and another $60 on box doesn't seem too bad for not having to modify much. |

Someone posted on here about using a 350 cca garden tractor battery and was having no problems so........
Space for a full size battery can be hard to find. _________________ 69 Meyers Manx II on 65 pan, 1 owner !

I have been using lawn tractor batteries for years at $25.. bucks a crack. For $100 bucks I can have enough batterys to last me 16 years. Granted they are not quite as small and light weigh as the Odyssey. The Odyssey would work well mounted under the bottom of the back seat.
Why do you want to mount it so far away from the engine/starter? I think it's better to run 2- 8 gauge wires from the back (battery) to the front of the buggy then it is to run 2 battery cables from the dash (battery) to the engine in the rear of the buggy.
Just a thought,
Jerry... |

I just started repping a line of batteries from EAST PENN for CARQUEST. We make a a couple of motorcycle batteries that are AGM or absorbed glass mat in design that would work well for a lot less money. They are completely sealed and can be mounted in any direction. I would use the ETX 18 or ETX 20. I would have used one on my buggy if I would have been repping them then and knew about them. WE are OEM for Harley Davidson. Here is a link to the specs:
http://www.batteryweb.com/motorcycledekaagm.cfm
And by the way using OHMS law, and assuming a 1800 watt starter with a 12.6 volt power source, we need about 140-160 CCA to spin our engines, so 225-275 CCA is more than enough to do the job.
Keep in mind, if you go with the Odyssey, although slick, what happens when that puppy goes out? With this line just pop in any CARQUEST and get a replacement.
AGM batteries are awesome and will go in all my stuff from now on. Do a search on google about them..
PSSSST an Optima battery uses this technology.....

EAST PENN makes some really top of the line stuff for the TeleComm market too. I install TONS (literally!) of their batteries in telephone offices and cell sites for a living. _________________ www.LoCashRacing.org

Thanks for the info guys
MURZI do they sell a tight mounting box for that battery?
my rear seat area has no cuttouts or indentions for a battery, so I'm considering just mounting the odyssey under the buggy above the trans. I'd have to remove the rear tire to acess but I think it would look clean and still be close to the starter.
also, the odyssey can be bought on ebay for $93 so only $4 cheaper than the motorcycle battery and has 3 times the cca's. I have a 1915 so it probably takes a little more to spin. |

This is what I did on my berrien. Five bucks in angle iron, two muffler clamps, four 3/8 bolts, and 15 minutes of labor. I made a box perimeter with the angle iron, welded bolts to the bottom, and then used the "female ends" of the muffler clamps to clamp to the torsion. The UL1 lawnmower battery, 275CCA, cranked my 2276 just fine....even in July heat.
No doubt, the Odyssey will work great. The box will look trick too!! Do it!!

The IRS swing arm and both half shaft boots ARE (barely!) visible in Murzi's picture.Looks like it works with IRS...... |

I see said the blind man ! The battery is on top of the torsion, not behind it. I wont know if I have room untill the body is back on. _________________ 69 Meyers Manx II on 65 pan, 1 owner !

Build this box for one of those ETX 18's or ETX 20's . You would have plenty of room then. Yes, my car was IRS. _________________ 62 vert

Here's what I did. Turns over the buggy no problem. IT's ok if you don't need spare juice to run accesories without the engine running.

Hey Rbake, how did that 680 fit in your buggy? I am going to get one of these Odyssey batteries. Do you know if the PC925 will fit in an Empi Imp battery box? I need to measure the dimensions of the box once I get home? Which is the best of the 3, the PC925? thx

I did the same thing as MURZI but with a Safari body and a IRS rear too. I used some angle iron and a pair of trailer axle U bolts. I think its a standard group 73 battery. $160 for battery and box sounds kind of spendy.

| I haven't installed yet, but I plan on doing exactly what bountyhunderdm did. I've been working on my 32 roadster a little more lately. But, the 680 is going to work in it also!! |

That odyssey pc680 is only 220 cca. Really look at the ETX line of batteries at CARQUEST. These batteries are AGM design just like the odyssey and can be deep cycled too. They are OEM on Harleys. Here are the specs. Sealed and can be mounted in any direction.

| Over the Christmas break, we went to Buttercup ( part of Glamis), with some friends, they had a rail that used 2 Odyssey batteries, one as a back up, neither would take a charge, dont know why, as they were only about a year old, but the real problem was that we could not find a replacement anywhere in the area, including Yuma, Arizona. Ended up strapping a group 24 battery in the rear seat floor pan. |
