I sent you a PM about a Bentley manual.
Have you considered trying something like Bars leak first. It might be worth a try to see if it minimizes the leakage. A friend of mine had some success with this on one of his watercooled Vanagons. I'm not sure how bad your leak is though.
Take your time and asses the problem carefully. Don't automatically assume that your heads are shot. The leak could be something else.
It always pays off in the long run to take your time and do a major repair without rushing in. You don't want to have to do it again next week, or worse, pay someone else to fix things later on down the road.
If you're relying on this van for daily driving/commuting then you might want to find another way to get to work for awhile. Take some time and research your problem and possible solutions. Also shop around for replacement head prices.
I can recommend Bob Donalds of Boston Engine (www.bostonengine.com). He sells outright heads, complete motors, etc. and has some great articles on his website you might want to check out.

i hear you about rushing
with the gaskets leaking, and the oil in the exhaust i figured heads
or worse
plus it was smoking white-ish before it went....i had hopes of getting more time out of it
i talked to a few people, and 2 local repair shops...and they were thinking heads too....
my plan is to break it down...and find out
i searched through the vangon new letter site also
i tried everything i could to get a different way around, its just now working out.....
i feel very defeated
hopefully itll all work out though |

ok im backing off from this a bit
bentley is coming (got it for $40)
saturday im gonna look into the problem a little more
i need a little advice though....
so far ive:
lost a belt and overheated
replaced belt and noticed that the heads were leaking
threw a fit and jumped to the worst case senerio
found used heads
backed off
drained oil..theres no coolant in it
tried to get that damn piece of metal off under the heads, stripped an exhaust bolt, gave up for the night
it seems as though theres oil in my exhaust, dripping out of a small hole
the one head is leaking the other one stopped
when i start it, it smokes, and the temp light comes right on
could the thermostat be stuck?
false light?
could the smoke come from coolant on the exhaust for the overheat?
where the hell did all of this coolant come from anyway...the hoses dont seem to be leaking?
why would there be oil in the exhaust?
thanks folks |

Sorry to say it but you are going to find your engine is in a bad way.
I have seen too many of them like that . you will find the heads are going to be very pitted on the sealing surface and the leaks will only get worse, fast.
There is no sealer in the world that will seal one of these engines for very long, and most of them leave crap in the radiator.
The oil in the exhaust can only be comming from a broken exhaust valve guide, not too likely, or stuck rings from an overheated cyl and piston.
I'd plan on doing new Cyl's, pistons and heads. be careful of used heads that the pitts haven't been patched with sealer or aluminum epoxy.
Best gasket prices at Bus Depot, full engine set for under $100. _________________ '65 standard bus

That light in the temp gauge is a water level warning not a temp light. It means that the coolent tank (in the engine compartment, not the overflow) is not completely full. Any air in the system can cause problems. check out the procedure to bleed the radiator. _________________ '65 standard bus

The valve guides are in the head.
You can replace heads, cyl's and pistons with the engine still in the van. _________________ '65 standard bus
