Hello All
I am a little confused here.
I bought a bug that was suppose to be a 65. It did not have papers so I really do not know.
It has the fat posts and a wide 5 drum with a ball joint front end.
I went to a website that takes the body tag info and gives you the build date. Mine came up with March 66. Ok it is not a 65 but no biggie.
I just checked the vin under the back seat. It starts with 117. I went to find the build date for the vin and it is August of 66.
It also says that a 65 would start with 115, a 66 with 116 and a 67 with 117.
I understand the body and chassis may have different build dates but I am a bit confused about the 117. Does the 117 mean this is an early 67 pan? I am not sure of the differenced in a 66 vs 67 pan. I don't think there are any differences in the actual pan but the beam and transaxle could be 66 .
Anyone help shed some light on this for me?
Thanks

| So I'm confused. Do your body and chassis VIN's match? If not, it is likely that someone used a '67 pan and a '66 body to create your bug. I will be doing this with my '73 chassis and whatever body I come up with for it. |

Agreed, you may have a mutt. Certainly not uncommon in the old VW world. If your chassis was also a '66 (like your body) it would not only start with 116, it would be identical to the number on the VIN tag behind the spare tire. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

I just re checked the body tag and it does start with 116
So now I need to know what to give the title company so I can get papers, should I use the body tag ot the chassis tag.
I don't think it will ever be a problem except I have to get the local sheriff to check the vin number against the bill of sale.
Thanks for your input!

Don't assume it's on the original pan. It could of been swapped years ago. _________________ Glenn

| Title it to whatever the chassis is, and if it has the fat posts (smaller windows) the body is from a '64 or earlier. (Unless it's Mexican, Australian or Brazilian...) |

I got lucky when I bought my 62, as the title matched the engine number, which was the original engine at the time. I was later able to get the title revised to the actual chassis number. Somehow I think in Colorado today I'd have more trouble with that. |

I am in Lexington Ky
Trying to figure out if I should use ITC for a title or try to get a title from rebuilding it from parts.
Not sure which way to go.
If I use a title company, I will need to register it as a 67 in case who ever checks the vin knows it is a 67 pan since it starts with 117 |

Daz,
Which number is on your Bill of Sale?, because the sheriff is going to check the pan number. _________________ The 68 Ghia

I have absolutely no papers on this vehicle at all other than the receipt from a shop where I purchased it but it does not have a vin number on it
That is why I was thinking on a title service
If I could find a KY title, I would just transfer it to my name and drive it. I am in a small town, don't think there would be any problems doing that. If I found KY papers, I do not have to have the sheriff inspect it.

You think Lexington is a small town?
I lived in KY my whole life until two years ago. Spent the last five in Richmond while I was in school. I wish every day I sill lived there.
My '59's title (West Virginia) goes to the body. I assume it's the original pan, cause of where the heater control is and it has the straight shock posts in the rear. But where the number was stamped into the pan, it's been welded on or something. The PO or PO before them totally screwed up the rear of the tunnel, but I'll worry about that when the body goes off for paint. _________________ 1959 Beetle |

Actually I am in Richmond, Most folks don't have any idea where in KY that is so I just say Lexington.
My body tag and tunnel tag do not match. I know the sheriff here so maybe I can ask which he will check
I just want to do this right the first time
Thanks, When did you leave Richmond? I have been here since 80 |

I lived in Richmond when I was at EKU, from 2000 to 2005. I grew up right outside Ft. Knox. I'm used to wide open and now I'm surrouned by hills, feel really clostrophobic (sp?). _________________ 1959 Beetle |
