... oil pressure problems.
Nice looking van. Starts and runs well. Two problems.
1) Oil pressure idiot light and accompanying (annoying) buzzer come on after warmed up. Won't do it at idle.
Changed oil (20w50), new Bosch filter. Still a problem.
2) Wish I could send an audio file, because I don't know if what I am hearing is rod knock or not. Comes on at about 2K. Not real noticeable, but it is there just the same. Can valves make a similar noise? How can I check?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

If it was my van, I would hook a gauge up so I could see what the actual pressure was doing, then you can rule out an indication problem.
Do some reading on www.vanagon.com
from the home page, go to info, then to arcticles and essays, and under maintenance there is a good arcticle about oil pressure problems that might be a little enlightening. Good Luck !!!!! |

There are 2 oil preasure switches. The light works off one and the buzzer works off the other. They have 2 different preasure settings. If they are both going off, check the oil preasure relief valve, may be partially stuck open or the seat could be badly worn. _________________ '65 standard bus

have seen that some of the cheaper filters will cause an oil preasure flicker. the Mahle ones dont. If it's a solid light I'd check the sensors and then if it continues use a guage to test preasure.
light clatter (almost sounding like someone is tapping lightly on a piece of metal) might just be a sticking lifter. IIRC if it sounds like marble bouncing around back there it's time for a rebuild before a rod punches a hole in the case. |

Well, the verdict is in. Bad bearings. Guess I am looking at a rebuild or replacement situation.
Anyone have a line on rebuilt or used 2.1 waterboxer engines? |

A used watercooled is never a good option unless it is real cheap and you don't mind taking it out again in a little while when the heads start leaking. Boston Bob has always built the most reliable engines, but I see that Gowesty has taken to selling some good looking engines from a Cal builder. _________________ '65 standard bus

I'm doing a conversion. Got a tight engine from an 87 GTI that has already been converted and installed in a Vanagon. We're going to move the whole thing into my van. Should be sweet.
Anyone looking for a used waterboxer to rebuild? I know that the heads were recently replaced. |

just remember that unless you are going to work on the converted engine yourself, a lot of shops won't touch a hybrid from what i understand. good luck with your mission! |
Yeah, I've considered that. I guess that if I have problems that I can't handle in the future, I'll have the shop that is doing the coversion take care of it. I don't have much time to devote to working on cars any more. Thanks for the "heads up". |
