Speaking of Elvis, what ever happened to him? I remember him listing VW's for sale all the time... or was it pictures in the gallery all the time? Either way, where's he at now?

I remember when Charlie Hamill gave it an award at the OCTO 1999 June Anniversary Meet, He said something like " award for the best 51,54 57,64,67 bus in attendance" sort of like Laugh In's "fickled finger of fate award" alot of pretense with little substance!

I was thinking of doing the same thing with the rear transmision i pulled out of my 54 Single cab..... bolt it onto my 53 Ragtop bug and and stick the 25 horse back in, then raise the front suspension and use the 16 inch BD wheels all round with off road tyres. it would definately turn heads at shows Laughing

The roof windows on a pre 52 have a deeper recess. The windows sit further into the roof and are not a flush fit like the later style.

From what I heard ya that's the bus that Barndoor Dave used to have. I think it had a kubelwagen tranny when Dave had it, and was a seriously rusty bastardised piece of crap, that had been kept on the road in E. Germany by any means possible...and where with bolt ons or weld ons it was not anywhere even close to an original bus. It had one Plexiglas corner window. I saw it when Dave hooked me up with steering parts to improve the Basic Blue 54 kombi what just got repainted. He had a huge stack of parts he was selling with that deluxe. Looked like a deluxe to me. Dave seemed to think it was a 51.

Later I saw the bd deluxe in Havasu...was Lou's, right?... and it was shiny and lowered and had no wiper motor (no holes under windsheilds for pivots, neither) Ronnie, got some before pics of that bus? how about the seat stand area?

Yes, I did a search and this is what I came up with about BD:s from 339 hits.... The rest was about later splits...

FYI, '63 only can be made with a combo of parts, its not like you have to look for that particular year. wolfgang may even stock them. the problem here is that the tie rod will now be at a bad angle because the bd spindle has the tie rod bolting up high and 55-67 spindles have the tie rod bolting up down low. an 'adapter' to effectively raise the tie rod could be made, and i have seen that, but you would be on your own for that. judging by pictures of the metal work on the bus that shouldnt be beyond your capabilities. would definently need to be beefy, since it is your steering and all. anyways, thats about all i know about lowering BDs. hope it helped.


Your best bet would be to locate a complete barndoor peam and rear end for the job.
I think if you cut off the front beam bracing that reaches back to the chassis and cut off the two locating brackets (that the bolts go through) from the rear of the beam and locate them like a bug on the front then it should bolt on giving you lots of lift. At the back end it should bolt up with minimal work. Maybe just a nose cone swap.

I probably have some photos of the 51 wannabe barndoor somewhere, but it would take me years to get around to finding them I suspect. When I first saw it a guy had it at an Arizona Bus Club show in Flagstaff, AZ. It was this pale lime greenish color and was super beat to hell. Even with 6 gallons of Bondo it is amazing that he was able to even make it a good 50 footer. The guy that had it at that time I had never met before and couldn't say that I have seen since. Don't remember where he said he got it, but he did have a nice box of NOS parts with it. Want to say he was asking 5 grand for it, which seemed outrageous for it considering the condition.
