Hi my names Amanda and recently i stumbled across a few Baywindow Kombis. Now, i am no expert when it comes to Baywindows. All i know is they are both campers.
I was walking my dog and spotted 2 over a fence. They look to be in fairly good rust free condition aswell. They caught my eye and i am looking to go make an offer on them on the weekend. Is there anything peticular i should be looking for, and what price should i be offering approx. eg. this model is worth more than that 
I dont have any pictures either, though they look to be in failry good condition. Id say they have been sitting a while though.
My ambition is to one day own a splitscreen, but i think a bay will suffice for now

I may be wrong (I usually am), but I thought kombi meant passenger bus, not camper...
Where are you located?
It'd be good to know if they run, first off...

Yea... your probably right about the Kombi thing 
Im in Australia, so i dont think there will be too much rust round. My dad may be able to help me get them running if they are not already, and if i decided to buy them, he will be looking aswell (as a second opinion).
Do you know if there are any special characteristics i should look for that are more desirable? eg, the type of camper, best yr model etc.
All help appreciated... Bays are new to me |

That depends wholly on taste. Personally, I'd take '74, cause that's what I've got. It's nice the was the sink is on one side and the stove on the other, so it's balanced. A lot of people will tell you '71 largely because of the type 1 motor and the transmission. I'd say don't let fuel injection scare you away, it's really not that bad. Make sure all the cooling tin is there. Westfalia seems to be the most common, and thus parts are more readily available. Apparently the child cot that goes over the front seats and the stool are valuable. Personally I don't use either one of them, but they got for some serious $$ on eBay. Front disk brakes are nice, I've got the '74 as a daily driver and a '69 project. The '69 has drums, and it's a little harder stopping.
Basically, go with whichever you personally like and feel most comfortable with. Everyone on here will tell you whatever they have is the best, for various reasons. VWs aren't just cars, they're people too.

Some good points there ***will be looking for child cots***  . If i do happen to come away with a new bus (or 2) then ill post some pictures. |

Im confident ill be able to get them at the right price... its just if the owner can be bothered selling them, i never see any cars at their house, and i know for a fact that they just sit in the backyard doing nothing surrounded by pot plants and old kids toys. Im looking forward to the weekend  |

You could look thru our classifieds for an idea about prices but doubt that would do you much good being in Australia. You said no rust. That's the first most important thing. I'd think the second would be if it's all there, complete and hasn't been all changed around and messed up and looks to be in reasonable original condition. Then it would be nice if it all ran wonderfully. But it probably isn't that way. So depending on how nice of a bus you want to end up with you might plan on the cost for a engine rebuild. If he says it has a rebuilt engine that probably means very little. Since just about every old bus has had the engine rebuilt, and rebuilt. Probably needs new tires since it has been sitting. Even if they look brand new they might not be any better than no tires at all. Another thing would be if it has the legal title. In my case, I'd only be interested if it was a '71 or possibly a '70. And then a big consideration would be who or how you will get necessary work done on it. Probably engine, brakes, etc.

She has our interest up now. More then one bus for sure and I did interpret that it was potted plants.

| She's just greedy I have been looking for a rust free 77 onward from a sunshine state for ever ,with all the hassle of shipping ,and she falls over 2!! whilst walking the dog!!!there all much loved and much welded over here in the uk my preferance is the westfalia layout all down one side with the passenger seat swiveling, and the more modern engine |

Can I just say it is so cool to hear of a woman being excited about buying a VW Bus!!

Yea its cool, im the only girl (and im only 18 ) i know of who loves VW's
**Update** I went past the house again and saw a car there so knocked on the door but nobody answered. I was about to walk off pouting and very dissapointed... but i saw someone wlaking out the back. I called out and asked him about his busses. He told me he didnt want to sell.
He thought he was king cause he had 2 busses (well thats the impression i got) but he really was just some weird guy with shoulder length black hair in a pony tail..  he was greasy looking dude. What made it even worse is that i got a better look at the busses and they were both great condition, looked all original. And i can get part pretty easy if i needed them.
Ill put something in his letter box if he decides to sell. I was angry on the walk home to say the least.
**Pot plants=potted plants** thats just what we call them over in Aus |

And i WILL one day own a bus, more sooner than later hopefully.
Im worried for those VW's, he was saying he will one day make them one or something along those lines and i was like WTF make one and sell me the other one!!! Blah!! haha. Theyre unregistered and everytime it rains i think of them sitting in the open yard, slowly gathering rust.  |

Keep looking. It took me a half a year to find my newest; the first one I had seen was a little out of budget then I found a rust-free beauty for a steal. I felt like I had won the lottery!
Hah - I just saw the part about shoulder-length hair in a ponytail - never a good thing!

FYI to help you for what you looking for http://www.ratwell.com/technical/BuyingGuide.html, this guy has compiled plenty of info, lots to read. It also has a section for the differences in years options, etc.
The whole site is helpful, hang in there you will find the beast of your own. I too have a 74 and love it with all its personality.

I've got my eye on an old splitty in someone's backyard. If it's in good shape and I can get it for a descent price, I think I can sell it to fund a new motor for my bay window.
