The truth hurt's.... it's shot... pull it and have just the 4th repaired by a competent tranny shop, if everything else is good you should be able to have that done, I have had many that popped out of 4th, 2nd and reverse but were quiet and good in all other respects repaired without needing complete rebuild.
Or find a good used 67-68(longer axles and tubes than eariler)But good luck on that, they seem to be getting hard to find and trust, unless you know for sure they were good, it's a drag to change one out and have the used one you just bought be a "howler" or pop out of gear as well. Junk yards will give you a 30-90 day warranty but how many times do you want to pull and replace them till you get a good one.....
I'd rather have my stuff fixed and put it back if I had the choice...

Andrew is correct that's always a good place to start, also you can see of you had old nasty metalic stuff in there or little to none at all..... plus the amount of metal on the magnetic drain plug tells a tale...

It may help but usally not for popping out of gear... Alot of times that will help to quiet down one that is starting to "sing" at highway speeds, but if it rumbles and growl s at an Idle and gets quiet when you push the clutch in... that's mainshaft bearing troubles and that's not gonna get much quieter. If you do change it switch to 85-140w gear lube... the heavier may help

well heres the real deal....... i put my VW
up on the forklift at work..... i pulled the drain plug to change the oil, this was months ago, maybe......maybe a half a quart came out... was like mud, lol it took damn near a gallon when i filled it with the heavier oil, 4th gear is the only prob, i guess i will just have to keep the ole bungie cord in service to hold it in gear, and another thing, this is a great forum nice work!!!!!! thanx Dave (67 bug)
