Vehicle Title Report

Does anyone know how to get a complete vehicle history. I want to get a title history report for my 61 kombi. According to the M code plate, my bus was purchased thru the tourist program, which if I understand correctly, was never deliverd to the states by VW, but rather picked up by the buyer overseas and then brought to the US at a later date. I am interested to know when and where the bus was first registered in the US and how many people have owned it since. I tried to get this info through the CA DMV by filling out some paperwork and sending a check to them. A couple weeks later I got a piece of paper that gave my name and the name of the guy I bought the car from. I already knew that! Hopefully some wise individual out there knows these secrets or how I can get them. Anything will help. Thanks!

Here in NJ, our titles(back when i got the bus) were lettered but i think the first owner got a blank title or a 1. i think i figured out that i am like the 12th or 13th owner from counting the alphabet. Don't know much more than the previous owner and the info i got back from writing Germany. Even Germany could not give me all the info other than it was purchased in Germany. Somehow it got here??? I wish i knew the history too. Good luck in your search!

I live in CA as well and tried to do the same thing. The DMV told me that they wouldn't give me any of the previous owner's information due to privacy concerns. If I remember correctly, they would give me an overall list of dates but no more info than that.
