just a post in case someone is looking to do the same. here is what i did.
I bought a 45 lb trunk release kit and simply use the "trunk release" button on my alarm remote. You have to wire it to a relay. the alarm cant handle the amperage needed to pop the solenoid.
first thing i did was remove the handle and weld in some sheet metal
then i mounted the solenoid low in the door i drilled a hole in the innder door panel and ran a bicycle cable up to a mount i fabbed up by the door latch.
here is a close up of where the cable ends near the door latch.
I simply attached the cable where the rod from the inside handle attaches to the door latch. i also removed the rod that pops up through the top of the door so you can lock and unlock the door by hand.. BE SURE THAT THE LOCKING MECHANISM ARM ON THE DOOR LATCH IS IN THE UP POSITION BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE DOOR or you will be doing it Dukes of Hazzard style for a while.
also, do not use the thin wire that comes in the kit. it is simply too small to handle the current needed to pop the 45 lb solenoid. i used i think 12 gauge wire.
it works like a charm..and the cool thing about doing this to a bus is that if it fails or the battery is dead you can simply open the back door and crawl through and open it up from the inside. |

Do you have a link to the kit you used?
Are you doing the slider too? |

here is the auction for the solenoid...remember really the only thing you will use is the solenoid...i dont think i l will be doing the slider. i am considering removing the outside handle and filling it in so the only way to open it would be from the inside.

| Way cool!! I did this to my Ghia also. Where did you get your parts? Finish pictures? |
no finish pictures yet...waaayy too much other stuff to do first. all i did was add a skim coat of bondo. as for the parts, i used the e bay link for the solenoid and used the trunk release from my existing alarm to operate it. |

For those looking for a great source of solenoids try this. Use the starter solenoids from older 6V VW starters. They have no problems when hooked to 12 volts. Many people just run the 6 volt starter when doing the 12 volt conversion. They are capable of pulling a lot and will even open your doors if voltages are low. I used them when I made my suicide doors on my Beetle. I operate them using a cheap remote car starter and a couple of relays. The car starter lock unlock feature of button 1 activates the drivers door relay and button 2, start/stop activates the pass door relay. The relays feed the solenoids. _________________ Licensed Automotive Service Technician
