Before I had air tools I had a craftsman 3/4" combo wrench I used to hit with a hammer to break stubborn ones loose.

barring the purchase of a compressor and impact gun, I suggest an even longer cheater bar....say 10 feet or so... seriously.

Get a BFH and hit the lug bolt square on the head a few times. That will loosen it up.

aero kroil penetrating oil, let it sit, then use the cheater bar that you can step on... At least that worked for me when the 66 had been sitting for 22 years...
Cheers

in the event that the above methods don't work, you may need to drill out the centers of the lub nuts, get a torch and heat it up all glowy pouring flame down the hole. it will turn out like butter.

My mechanic buddy is gonna lend me his ELECTRIC impact wrench to do mine. Doesn't sound as good as air, but he swears that it works great.

Hey Levenbanelli? What would you suggest the 10 foot cheater bar be made of? Seriously, because I have the same problem on my Super ........(I know, cut me some slack)............. Beetle project.

Ok I just got mine loose after weeks of trying different things.

Went to home depot, got a 6 foot plumbing pipe. It's very thick and heavy.

Have a 1/2" craftsman ratchet.

Have an impact socket.

Tried having 300lb neighbor stand on wheel [took drum off spindle] but I turned HIM.

Had neighbor drive Jeep up onto my driveway. Lifted Jeep and put wheel under Jeep wheel. Lowered Jeep onto VW wheel.

That worked Wink This after trying heat, using impact set at OVER max air pressure going cw and ccw, and using PB on back end of studs.

Pain in my ... hah

I would suggest a nice thick pipe from home depot or lowe's plumbing department. Anything thin wall is just going to bend if it's that long Shocked

I know I can get the right tool......at Total Rental.......for 28 bucks a day and I know I can get an impact wrench from a VW community friend, but I was just wondering about ingenuity with what we have in our yards. Thanks for the info.

i have only had 1 lugbolt that i could'nt remove with a long breaker bar. it was already rounded off and the socket kept slipping.

curious if anyone has ever actually broken off a lugbolt trying to remove it?

Sometimes the really stuck part is on the cone of the wheel part not the threads. If you can get them loose, always loosen them together, not take one off at a time. The last two always seem to get stuck that way. Also if you can get 4 tough ones off and the last one is the frozen one then rotate the wheel and lug bolt together against the drum. Kapische?

Yeah, I just had a pipe lying in the barn that I had to use for my axle nuts, It was more like 12 feet long and I hung off of it while my buddy torched and hammered the nut.

Wow...that sentence is a bad joke waiting to be exploited. Brick wall

I had a 7 foot piece of pipe in a cheater bar .
I was lifting the bus 6 or 8 " off the ground .
I found that the wheel would turn , so I tied a cement block through the one of the openings in the rim . It didn't turn then .
The cement block trick might not work if you have 14" rims , the slots are smaller , or they dont have any , I forget which .
Either way , best of luck with it .
