Is there a way to check the fuel guage, to make sure it is working properly?

Short the wire at the tank end to ground (with ignition on). Gauge should peg past full. If it does and gauge doesn't work, it is most likely sending unit. If gauge doesn't peg, may be faulty gauge or wire broken. If gauge is always pegged, likely a short to ground where ire enters cover over tank unit.

There is also a plug in voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. If the regulator is bad, grounding the lead will have no effect on the gauge.
