On the A-team bus, I replaced all of the rear torsion bar bushings with NOS units. I removed the long shift rod, ran a clutch cable down the tube and pushed some rags through with solvent to clean out the crud. Reinstalled the long shift rod with new shift bushings. I drained the gastank and spent some time cleaning grease off the transmission area. Looks nice now.....nice velvet green paint. I spent some time cutting off the right rear bumper bracket (it's welded to the frame really good).....I'll get back to it later. I installed new rear rubber brake hoses. Transmission should go back in tomorrow.

I tracked a pesky voltage drain to the headlight switch, then rebuilt the switch. All is good for now. Now I just need to figure out how to wire my battery isolator to work with the vw charging system (internally regulated alternator). |

I put the tranny back in the A-team bus.....and then got stuck realizing I didn't have any rear wheel cylinders on hand.
Guess I'll start working on the engine until the parts come in. |

I ended up mocking up the whole steering column on my bus to except a steering lock. Cut a hole in the post welded up the piece that slide down the shaft where the lock engages and welded it on. Put the whole thing together bolted up the steering box mounted all the parts and the damn thing works! So next we paint it all gloss black and move on the next faze. The things you do to make shit work! _________________ CRG

New shocks, blead the brakes, put on a new set of tires, and started trying to find a new set of spacers as my tires are hitting the spring plates. _________________ I own a copy of "The Car of the Century" by Garwood. This means I am authorized to act like a twat in thesamba forums. |

I finished sanding off the cheap ass primer below the beltline on my '65 and then spent triple the amount of time removing pounds and pounds of bondo. Not a straight panel on this thing a lots of Frankenwelding. The corners are really a mess. The cut them partially to fold them out and work out debts then welded them back with splotches of weld over the seams naturally and then bondoed over it. A "seamless" repair if you will. On the nose they cut the old one off just below the windshield frame and then lap welded a new one on. At least there is no real rust issues, but the collision damage is really bad.

I installed new rear axle seals on the Cragar Kombi/A-team bus. The decklid on this bus is held on by a thread so dissasembled four pairs of decklid hinges and ordered some 5mm rod to make new pins to rebuild them. I think I have more crappy decklid hinges to rebuils around somewhere.....migth as well do them all at once. The hinges should be good as new and the investment is pretty low....although it takes a while to get those old pins out.
The rear brake parts should get here from Ronnie tomorrow and I should have it on the ground tomorrow afternoon. Then I get to dive into the mystery motor. |

for a quick repair i have used two cheap high speed steel drill bits that after using one to completely drill a old pin out i cut it to length with a die grinder and use it as the new tool steel pin _________________ 1958 custom camper

I've got about a 20 hinges to redo so I figured it would be cheaper to buy the correct materials to do it. I've used nails before but the end product was never as tight as the originals. The materials cost was less than $20 and I'll have enough material to redo about 25 of them. I was planning to drill holes in the ends and pean them over like they did originally. |

I dug down real deep and compounded & waxed the engine vents, the gas door interior, and the area around the gas filler neck.
I somehow managed to get through it without any help.
Don't hate. It's better than nothing.  |

I sent this email a friend this morning;
<I ordered the material to make the pins from Mcmaster Carr.
Repinning them should be easy, but it was a pain in the ass to get the old pins out without damaging the hinge.
I used a drill press to drill the pin out from each side, being careful just to drill out the outter hinge piece. Then I seperated the halves with a hammer (after drilling the outter setions of the hinge pin out there isn't that much left holding them together) and heated the center piece of the hinge cherry red and quenched it with water. They I pushed the center portion of the pin out with a drift and a hammer. Penetrating oil helps.
Here's the material I ordered;
8116K61 A2 Tool Steel Tight-tolerance Metric Rod, 5 Mm Diameter, 1’ Length
Hopefully this material is workable enough to do what I want.
I was going to cut them to length, drill center holes in the ends like the originals and then pean them on the edges.>
I thought about getting oversized hinge pins, but all of the ones I took apart....even the super nasty ones had damage to the pin and not to the hinge. I'll post my results after I get the material. |
