Yes indeed this certainly is a hotbed of activity. I misspoke when I said there was a wire running up the column. The black wire I was referring to is the wire in the pic I posted and it is very clearly attached to the horn button. It was my '62 that had the wire running up the steering column and it was brown, not black. Sorry for the confusion. |

Hi All,
I got it all back together and now it seems like the steering wheel is too far away from the contacts. Tightened the nut doesn't help as the tapered splines are mated and it won't budge. The bentley gap isn't that much.
Any ideas on how to adjust?
I even gave in for the sage green paint for 25/can. looks like a good match though.
Thanks.

Just to jump on this horn thread. One of my 79s sounds like you're typical VW.. but Charlie sounds like a Buick and has two horns down there below the bumper. Is there a source for a VW sounding horn? I saw some listings on BD.. some for double, some for single.... but I have no idea if they are aftermarket, or if they sound like a VW. Ya know? Little help? _________________ Owner of: "The Party Pickle" (a 1979 2 Liter FI "Raby Camper Special" Sage Green Westy Campmobile) & "Charlie Brown" (a 1979 2 Liter FI "Rob Grant Rebuild" Agate Brown/Dakota Beige Station Wagon)

sure, there are plenty of possible bad connection spots, but they are not impossible to isolate, as everything is pretty much in-line with each other (again, look at my pics). 5 minutes with an ohm meter can easily diagnose which part of the ground or power system is bad.

5 minutes is way too long. Use a test lite. From the horn, the path is wiring harness> turn signal switch harness> brass brush> brass slip ring (part of cancelling assembly)> black wire to horn contact>other side of horn contact to steering wheel.
Not too hard. when somebody gives you the pictures.
Often the brass brush wears out. I think a bit of white grease on the slip ring would be a good idea. You can easily see if the brass brush is touching the slip ring.
