rear hatch spring????

I just bought this 67 kombi thats been sitting in this one teachers yard for over 5 years...her and her husband were teachers in Western Germany for at least 2 years..bought this bus there and drove it around for maybe 6 months..there job was done there then wanted to bring bus back to the states in the early 70s...they told me parts were so cheap there in Germany...but then when they brought the bus here...they lost interest and just let it sit..rockers are history and rear hatch spring is ripping off...Is there any way to replace those hatch spring without having to cut or weld anything?...Help
