My gear shift lever has large amounts of slop and is very loose.
I know from previous busses that there is lots of travel and the fact
that the shift rod goes all the way to the back means speed shifiting and
accuracy are not possible.
But lately it just seems to be very very sloppy and inaccurate-
I have a new transmission-
so maybe the front bushing or the rear coupling?
suggestions? _________________ 77bus- I love it-then I hate it-then I love it-then... |

Go through everything front to back / back to front which ever works for you, and makes sure everything is tightened up well. Something is probably just loose or not connected properly since the new tranny was put in. _________________ -Matt |

.. I would replace the rear coupling and get a front and rear shifter shaft bushings to prevent any side to side movement...if this does not work , maybe a new shifteris in order...certainly not for everyone, but I make a "cut" along the entire length of the bushings and place them onto the shaft with some grease and push it into the tube without taking out the old one..a lot easier then having to take apart the shaft..made a big difference for me |

Agreed... check the shifter at the front first... take the rubber mat up and unbolt it.. the "pin" that goes in the slot of the head of the shift rod/cup may have come out of position... first and * one of the easiest things to check other than sliding under the rear to get a visual on the shifter "coupler"

If you haven't pulled shifter linkage apart try this first.
Put gearstick in neutral-
Loosen two bolts on shifter plate.
Pull GENTLY into second.
Move back into neutral and tighten bolts.
Try complete shift pattern. Road test.
This may improve it -otherwise looks like bush--- _________________ 1973 Kombi poptop camper

Thanks everyone-and especially the pics-
I will lift the mat and check the shifter parts in the front.
I do not know the adjustment procedure.
Are there rebuild kits for the under the lever parts?
I know where to get the bushings and rear coupler. _________________ 77bus- I love it-then I hate it-then I love it-then... |

Thanks everyone. Turned out to be a simple fix- the shifer plate
under the mat was loose. Didn't realize Bentley had an adjustment
procedure(never needed that section) found it - adjusted and tightened this morning.
It shifts perfectly- just like new in and out of all gears.

Have a friend with a lift-and because I had some rear shift rod rattle
and buzz particularly in third- we cut a 1 inch pc of red heater hose-
slit it and put it on the rear rod. Then pushed it into the tube-
It is a prefect fit and the shifter is dead quiet now and very smooth. _________________ 77bus- I love it-then I hate it-then I love it-then... |

No sheet! I love fixes like that. I would throw away the quick shifter thing though. They're junk. Buy a Hurst shifter. You'll think you're in heaven. The plastic bushing under the shifter is not hard to instal, as explained above. You should check it. _________________ 75 type 2 http://gusc1.tripod.com/1975vwtype2

I had a guy to to my house complaining of shifting problems. He had taken his 1971 bus to a local garage and paid them $160 and they still didn't fix it. First thing I did was pull the gear shift lever and found that they had installed the reverse lockout plate upside down. I've also found them installed backward before too. Make sure you compare yours to the picture in the Bentley book. |

Hey all,
Since we're asking, mine squeeks like hell underneath the boot and can be hard to go into gea but the pattern is tight. Am I just lacking grease? What kind of grease do you recommend? The picture (top of post) looks like there is no grease in there.

You can use just about any grease in there. Whatever I have around is what I use. I fill the cup and then ram the ball down into it with the pin facing forward. |
