Just leave the windows open so you can reach in and unlock it with out using the key.
Alternately you could look through the Jegs or Summit catalogs to see if any of the kits they sell for hot rods/customs might work for the vanagon. I've never checked but those kits are made to fit on cars that were not equipped with power locks from the factory, so they may work. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

I think it would be easier to just leave the windows open especially if they've got power windows then they dont even have to waste all that energy cranking them down, let alone throwing a brick. _________________ 89 Bluestar-2.5 Subaru Powered-RIP

True, but if she keeps the brick in her purse, it can double as protection from muggers. An added security feature, say no more, say no more! _________________ -- 1987 Westfalia automatic (Captain Vino) |

The first thing I did after I bought mine is to add a Clifford alarm bought from ebay for $60. The purpose of the alarm is to get remote door locks. As my van did not have power door locks, I have to add the moter driven actuators ( not the stock units ) to the two front doors and the sliding door. The only difficult part is to run the wires to the actuators. If your Vanagon already have power door locks, it will be much easier. You need to tap into the two control wires from the driver side and program the alarm unit for vacuum type door lock actuators so the actiivation signal will be on for a longer time. _________________ Steve

i added this alarm system to my van. it seems to work ok. had to make some brackets for actuators and run wires. alarm and 4 door locks including side and rear hatch. has remote start plus extra inputs and outputs.

I put this system in, keyless and alarm was not a huge increase in price over just keyless. The big expense is the rear hatch uses a different lock mechanism if it is electric.

I never looked much into it.
But the one DP mentions
http://www.a1electric.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?S...W02F-B6000
is kind of nice.
(or same minus alarm for 10$ less).
One of my actuator is broken. (I think. I need to put time on this)
I am pretty the other ones will eventually mess someday.
With this system, I can prevent that with 4 new actuators. (we have 4 doors, including hatch, so that's great).
I could even sell my actuator and make some money out of it!
My only concern is the wiring. If one or more of my wires is messing, (I am not sure of that yet), I simply may be down to step 1 again.
From what I see, it's the old centralized system again (different) but using the same wiring...

i installed a slide switch in the door and in the door frame this switch was spring loaded so the contacts would make when the door was closed. the alarm unit i installed is programable and has options to automatically lock doors and turn lights out.
i used a sliding door contact kit from a1 electric
