Right now my key is broken off in the ignition switch, luckily I've been able to turn it with a screw driver but I need to pull this guy out so I can weld the key back together. Do I have to open up the tabs on the back of the switch and disassemble the barrel to get it out? I'm not looking forward to taking it down to the springs and barrel pins. Confused

Find an older locksmith shop in your area. They will be able to not only remove the remains of the key, but make a new one off the code on the switch that will work ten times better.

i agree, bring the ignition switch to a locksmith...it will be simple for them to get your key out and make you a copy. i'll bet it will around $20.

If/ when you take it to the locksmith, I'd be interested to know how they pull these things out. They have no doubt done this sort of thing plenty of times, but it would be nice to know how they do it on the off chance one night when I snap mine off and its 200 miles from home and its dark (and I have the spare Laughing )

Don't bother welding the key back together, many locksmiths can cut a new one from the code on the body.

Forget doing any of it and just send the whole thing to Gabriels and get him to remove it and send it back to you with 2 fresh cut correct looking new keys at the same time. You can trust sending him your barrel and some cash Wink

When I first broke the key off in the ignition I hot wired the car to get it back in the garage. It only takes a minute at most to pop the hood and have the engine started in a beetle. Shocked Anyways I'll try and find a locksmith in town, I'm sure my uncle knows some good ones from restoring his '32 Chevy.

Post a pic of the other end of the switch. Some can be taken apart, some can't.

I wouldn't go to your local locksmith. What does he know about a VW lock? Is he familiar with how to disassemble a 50 year old VW switch?

If you are going to get a new key cut at just any locksmiths you will get something ugly and modern and that is if he can even find a similar blank that will do, general locksmiths dont hold Huf and vw replica's of the original keys, so it just depends if you are bothered about that or not really. The replica new keys are very nice.

LOL, to a locksmith, a lock is a lock...they are pretty much all the same, but do what you want. i once went to an all VW junk yard and removed about 25 ignition locks from 1956 to about 1966 beetles and busses and have a lifetime supply. i bring them to my locksmith and for $12.00 makes me a set of keys for them.

Obviously if you knew anything about VW locks, you'd be doing your own lock work rather than taking it to a locksmith.

VW locks look NOTHING like Chevy locks. They look NOTHING like Ford locks. They look NOTHING like Honda locks.......... A locksmith CAN'T know every lock on the planet, especially 50 year old VW locks. Why would you pay someone to mess around with your lock, who probably hasn't seen one before?

Either send your lock to Gabriel, or post a pic of the other end and let me tell you all about it.

Here's the backside of the switch, and one of the 3 tabs that hold the back onto the case.

This happened to me once, with an euro-style steering column lock - the key broke-off inside, much like yours.
I was able to get it back with a pair of tweezers. Smile

Here's the backside of the switch, and one of the 3 tabs that hold the back onto the case.

This is an EASY fix.
Forget about the 3 small tabs holding the black plastic part in place. If you try to bend them out, you will destroy the whole thing. Besides, it won't come apart even if you did it that way.

Instead, have a look down the center bore. In the center is a silver bit. That's the back end of the lock cylinder. Look closely at it further in. There's a small wire clip holding it in. You need to get that clip out. I use an old dental pick. Anything really pointy will do. Once you get that out, the lock cylinder will come out the other end. Then you'll have access to be able to push the busted bit of key out. You can also take the opportunity to clean up the 50+ years of dirt and gunk, then grease it up when you install it.

Russ's right, John. The relatively rare Bosch ignition switch's lock cylinder is riveted in place. Taking it apart then reassembling it would be difficult.
All other switches are like the one in the pic above. Here's what it all looks like when taken apart. The wire clip locks in the groove indicated:
