I've just come into a 53 sunroof oval. In fairly clean original cond. except no fenders. But the big thing missing is the sunroof hardware. There is only the opening in the roof. I know nothing about the sunroof, but I understand the sunroof section from my 61 is not correct for the 53. What years would be correct, and does anyone know of a source of written information on the aforementioned roof section? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Anyone have what I'm looking for? Trades?

the sunroof you are looking at is 55 and earlier. commonly refered to as a 3 fold rag. be prepared to pay $1000 for just the mech. if you can find one that is, they are getting very scarce.

Complete is next to imposible to find, as I found every one with one tries to say " it's out of a split" Shocked sure buddy!!

Be on the lookout for one close to complete, some of the parts can be fabricated if you are good at fabrication, but you are gonna need a set of originals to fabricate it Very Happy

Seen them at pomona for as little as $500,

The absolute best source would be the Bentley manual. I have the book for my '56 ragtop and it goes into unbelievable detail. If and when you are able to find the mechanism, the book will definately come in handy - not to mention for all of the other projects you'll undoubtedly get into with that '53.

Thanks people.....my sunroof knowledge is increasing by the minute. I have an original VW 53-57 shop manual. I never even thought to look there. (I don't get out often either). Any more info anyone has would always be great. Thanks again, I'll let you know if I find anything.
