ok, so I posted the rant part on rants, but I need to know the technical stuff. Went outside this morning, found this
This is the driver's side sliding window. How hard is that to replace? Anybody got one they'll sell cheap? Being a cheap bastard, all I have is collision insurance, so it's all on me...

Thats a bummer , that happen often in your area ?
Those slidder windows are pretty common, call a few bone yards if no one here has one, then just take it to a Glass shop & have them pop it in, this would be cheaper than having the shop order one for you. There is a little trick to putting them in using a peice of rope, I've seen it done, but never mastered it....... _________________ Tom

That sucks, but if a window has to break thats a good one. Do what crukab above said. For a good cheap temporary fix, get a piece of plexiglass from the hardware store, cut it out with a dremel and pop it
in. This will keep the rain out, and you can drive it if you need to, (really should have safety glass) and it won't look stupid like a black plastic bag and duct tape. also looks like a window so someone won't be as temped to steal your stuff if its parked. _________________ My Art:

OK, to clarify - is it possible to replace just that one piece of glass, or do I need to replace the whole unit, which is 2 pieces of glass, plus frame plus rubber? I've been told both ways. I was also told that if I put in a window from a non-Westy, then the screen won't fit. Can anyone confirm that?

You need to replace the whole assembly. I have not been able to disassemble and reassemble them.....
FYI, Westy sliding windows and pass Vanagon sliding windows are
different. The pass Vanagon window has the latch at the corner. The Westy latch is 14 1/2" back from the corner. The 2 pieces of glass are different sizes in each window assembly.
I can get you a complete Westy drivers side window assembly, but I am in Fresno, Calif. Shipping will be expensive. |
