|
|
Recently i dumped my dads super in the weeds.
i have a skid plate from a 4x4 ranger that will be modified to cover the control arm mounts from bashing the ground. I have already bottomed out a few times and care not to rip something off @ high speeds.
rolling hard.
my query is should i fab the plate to bolt on and off by drilling holes in the bulkhead or should a just weld it on? |

The skid plate isnt gonna last long if its that low.You are better off not using one.I've been driving slammed vehicles for 20 + years with no issue. The key is to watch where & how you drive. |

I like it. I say just drive carfully and lower the back alittle more to get the sway bar off the ground. |

The back is going to be lowered when the new cofap shocks arrive this week.
before i try the plate im going to try and mount some 3\8 thick rubber from a big rig mudflap. Some greaser\rodder guy has something similar on his old bagged lead sled. more pics when work is finished |

I am making a skidplate for my super because no matter how hard you try... eventually you rill hit something.
My super hit the little lip in front of overpasses on the interstates. I had less than a half inch of clearance depending on the load in the car!
I was thinking of using 1/4" aluminum plate, same thats used for aftermarket plates on later model VW's.
I will draw a small design of what I was thinking in a bit! |

Although, it is not a daily driver, this VW is driven frequently by me its owner and the mechanic infantibus in Philly. City streets are rough, it bottoms out crossing well paved intersections because of the crown in the road. I'd like the underside to have some protection. It looks like the mud flap idea might work, I'll post pix (if I can get a camera under the car). |

ok well the sway bar mounts are protected. basically i just cut a square the same size of the mount and drilled a hole through it, and mounted it with the sway bar mount itself.
i need you to take some pics dad so people can see.
the main idead is not for it to be pretty but for it to be functional.
i do need new brackets as they have almost already ground through.
the other mechanic here thinks that a metal plate will do the best, i was under an 08 impala today and the aluminum subframe that cradles the engine and trans looks like it has the perfect approach angle and strength.
now im just waiting for new shocks to come form the factory to lower the back down. |

The steel stock has arrived courtesy of my buddy rob, its a sheet of 1/4 thick steel plate. my main plan was to make the skid plate boltable to the existing front bumper mounts.
Today i installed new cofap rear shocks. They required some grinding due to them not fitting in stock locations.
I read once through on airkewld's drop your rear article it looks pretty simple. any advice for first timers would be appreciated. i will be chaining and jackstands underneath the arm to support everything.
The rear will be going down 2 clicks, and hopefully that will level everything out.
