I am preparing to remove the body on my 67 bug and came to the equalizer springs in the back. Haynes describes this as "provides additional progressive spring action to assist the torsion bars when the vehicle is loaded down." I am ratting this car. No one will ever sit in the back. Do I need this spring? Will it affect handling? Thanks for your help.

YES, you need this spring! This was an added extra safety feature that helps keep the rear wheels from tucking under during hard cornering.

The car is a swing axle and under hard cornering if the loaded (outside) wheel gets a bite on the pavement, the wheel tucks under the car. This jacks the body up in the air and just a half a second, you are on your head.

Look, it's no big deal to retain the bar, and the parts and links and rubbers needed to refurbish it so it works like it should only cost a couple bucks.

Hopefully you will NEVER need it. But when you are in the ditch on your roof, it's too late to kick yourself for not keeping it.

Google VW rat rod pics. This is the look I am going after. It will have a nice paint job but be fenderless with the front beam pushed 8 inches forward.

I am SSSSOOOO SORRY I'm not doing this the way you think I should. I thought rescuing a bug from the crusher was worth it. If you don't know who is asking for help why did you respond at all.

Okay, let me simplify it for you. It's not about what you are doing to the car.

You ask for help. To help you, I ask for clarification. You tell me to go search on google.

Fine, go search on google for the answer to YOUR question.

It was not ME who was asking for help.

Dick.

Yes, remove the z-bar. Also, install a Bosch 009 distributor, disable the electric choke, remove the thermostat and flaps.

This '67 is gonna get 'ratted', and the beam pushed 8", and we're worried about the wheels tucking under???? Laughing Yank it.....pull the seat belts while you're at it.

Actually you were asking for help. You didn't know what a VW rat rod was. I figured a picture was worth a 1000 words. I didn't mean to make it difficult for you. In case you didn't notice I had already thanked a few civilized individuals for their opinions and indicated that I would take their advise.

I was quite civil in asking a clarification question. You are a novice to this site, and the terminology here is not necessarily what is used elsewhere. Rather than assume (and I can see you are quite familiar with the joke about this term), I politely asked.

Your question's answer, on the other hand, was trivially available if you cared to search this site. It's been discussed both in simple terms, and also in excruciating detail, both for stock and shimmed configurations, including the effect of leaving it out, using it in conjunction with lowering, and other suspension mods.

But I guess you were too busy "helping" me (by telling me to search) to search for yourself.

Sure am glad this site now has your expert "help" to guide us. Don't know how we survived without you before this week.

The Z-bar was added not only as a stabilizer bar but also as an overload spring. The torsion bars on 67-68's are smaller in diameter and have a lower ride height and softer ride.
If you're just going to slam it, you could remove the Z-bar and get some torsion bars from a '66 or earlier.
