Is a special kind of coolant needed after using the coolant conditioner from the Suby Dealership? Or any of the leak stop products for that matter? _________________ 83 Vanagon

when you start your van, does white vapor eventually come out the tailpipe and then go away after the engine is at operating temperature? if so, you most likely have an internal leak and the vapor is coolant burning off... _________________ 1963 Type II Kombi

So I just got back from the Suby Dealership and the guy working the parts counter asked me why I needed the coolant conditioner. I began to tell him and he stopped me and told me how he had used it in his GMC truck 3 years ago and has yet to have any leaks. Another guy in the parts department told me he has seen the stuffwork wonders. Well tomorrow morning I am going to give it a shot and see if I have the good results I am hearing and reading about. I will let you all know how it holds up. _________________ 83 Vanagon

Hi all,
Is my understanding correct that this product will do nothing for an internal head combustion leak?

I am no expert, but my understanding is that the liquid reacts with air to become thick/solid and fill the spaces where there are leaks. It needs to go in a pressurized, closed, air-free (mostly, I guess) system. I would suck it out and throw it away as it most likely has started reacting and is getting sludge-like because so much of the liquid's surface area is contacting air.
Like I said, I'm no expert and just inferring this. _________________ '85 GL w/2.1L "The Tardis"

Needs to go in the pressurized tank on the driver's side, not in the tank behind the license plate. _________________ 1990 GL 7-passenger

One other thing. Your first post suggests that the leak is coming from the water jacket (usually referred to as the "head gasket.") But you never said you identified where the leak is coming from. There are lots of hoses and tubes that can leak, run down the engine, and drip off of the gasket at the bottom making it look like a leaking gasket. If it were my van I would remove all the engine tin, add more coolant/water, get the engine hot, and try to determine for certain what's leaking. |
I finally just had the time to dive under and really try to spot the leak origin, and it seems to be coming from some weep hole at the bottom of what i can only assume to be the water pump. It's a fast leak I don't think any additive is gong to fix. Have you guys ever seen this? |

If it's coming from that weep hole in the water pump, the water pump is telling you that all things are mortal, that there is an end to everything, and it is time to get and install a new water pump. It's failing. DO NOT use a sealant in the hope of fixing THAT.
Recent good thread on the remove and replace--good luck!

| yeah, I'm only six posts into membership here and I'm posting questions that are easily answered by a quick search. Sorry bros. But I gotta thank FUNAGON for knockin me on the head "anybody home McFly?" to actually check the source of the leak before I added Bar's Leaks or Subbie magic goo, etc. |

If it is a 1.9L, I have a New waterpump listed in the classifieds for a reasonable price. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

What brand is it? I'm going to need one soon.
Now back to the Subaru stuff.
I got some from the dealer today, have it in my 91 and ran it at idle w/revving periodically to get the coolant moving. Went through 4 full cycles all the way hot until the front fans blows.
My question(s). How long does it take to work? No real directions to be had. Should I run it a bit, drive it a bit, let it cool down overnight, always keep the pressure in or bleed it out with the air, keep refilling the inside tank, what are others experiences?
Thank you,

Whatever coolant leak I had is now gone!! It seemed to work after the second bottle. I put one in yesterday and when I woke up I still had a little coolant on the ground. So I put another one in today and it seems to have gone away.
So as of now I will give this product 2 thumbs up! I will let you know if and when the leak shows up again. _________________ 83 Vanagon

| I'm probably asking for it by merely wondering, but how long do you guys think I could get by sealing the weep hole with JB weld until the new pump arrives? |

It ain't the weep hole that's the problem, that's just a symptom. Nothing you do will make the pump last any longer than its going to, at this point. D'ja order that pump?

Yep. After reading all the posts and doing my research.. I have yet to see anything about it helping with a waterpump. Van Cafe has a pretty good deal on a water pump. _________________ 83 Vanagon
