funny, after reading this post I'm surprised at many of the comments...to say someone has no buisness doing something because they may have to ask a few questions in the process is complete nonesense.
How else do you learn? I'm sure it helps pump up some ego's when others aren't up to speed on your particular subject of expertise, but what a crappy forum this would be if everyone thought that way.
Maybe some of us doing some of these jobs that require a lot of knowledge/skill will wind up hatching the engine, maybe not does it mean we shouldn't try?
I helped a friend do a rebuild on his bus many years ago, neither of us had ever done one of these, we had a great time, but realized in the process that we could have used a lot more knowledge than we had, you could easily say we had no buisness that deep in the engine... the bus is still running fine and we continue to learn.... |

Yeah - I gotta say that really brought me down. When I bought my Westy four years ago I didn't own a screwdriver. If it wasn't for the Samba community I wouldn't have learned as much as I have. _________________ 1986 Westy 2WD auto a.k.a. "The Old Girl"

You have taken my words OUT OF CONTEXT and added your own opinion.
:fist:
SO FOR YOUR CLARIFICATION
To get deep in the engine, where you can reach the rods and not "understand" the necessity to replace the faulty rod bolts you risk throwing a rod and wasting all the time/$$$ spent on the top end.
Ever work in a shop on Vanagons? No?
"For everything there is a first time"
minsk is on the right path.I'm sure he "understands". _________________ LEARN TO SELF RESCUE

I don't see the words 'necessity' or 'risk'. I see the word 'how'. You were ragging on the guy cuz he didn't know how. Sorry, man.[/i] _________________ 1986 Westy 2WD auto a.k.a. "The Old Girl"

Kaiser: Nothing was out of context, it was however my opinion. Even your next reply sounds like someones dad "ever work in a shop on vanagons-NO" actually yes, and I understand very well what you were saying and again that comment was incredibly condescending.
Ben and others answered questions several times here without bravado, without letters in all caps and w/o sounding like he was responding to someone who didn't have a clue... again my opinion. |

Oh - and to the original poster's problem - I've noticed in the past a couple threads where someone's rebuild was undone by not having the wrist pin clips in all the way. It's really tight in there and I can see how someone might miss this. After popping the rings in, I double-checked and triple-checked by turning the rings a few revolutions with an ice pick.
For some reason I really sweated this.

| I bought a pair of long reach n-nose pliers that are at about 20 degree angle and with a dremel wheel notched the tips to remove/install pin clips on the wbx. Soak the pin area with carbcleaner for a bit and makes getting pins out easier. |
