Nope, havent driven it anywhere. Only started it on the dolly. The easiest next step for me on this engine would be to mill the plenum off and put one port per so that I could just bolt on my 3.0L Porsche 911 CIS setup. I need to get another 110 head so I can bring the pair to my friends shop for the modification. Funny thing about CIS, no real electronics Wink

Today was a great day! I finished the last rough fitting of the tins and things went very well. I am glad I dropped the engine and had it in the garage before the storm hit.

I did a little trimming, welding, and designing of the tin.

Notice I made the two front tins into one piece. Its better and stronger that way. I had no reason to remove either side while in the bus.

Oil P hose and sensor. Notice I also made the front pieces into one piece.

Where'd you get that air cleaner? and how much? I'm suffering simular clearance issues with my 2.3 swap and need a cheap space conserving option like that.

$27 at Advance Auto parts. It is a Mr Gasket setup and comes with a good filter (1480a) that is 2" tall. I got a FIL2100 (the small one pictured) at NAPA. That gave me the best clearance of all of them.

To close up that gap on the rear, you might try a stock corvair piece for back there. you'll want something for a '64 or earlier corvair. It's just a piece of high temp rubberised cloth type material. Held in place by staples on the engine side through the tin, and then clamped in place on the body side with a ~1/2" wide by piece of steel to seal up the body.

Mike

Just found your thread and photos, beautiful bus!

Several years ago, I put a Corvair engine into a '67 splittie using the transvair kit and the 4 spd manual transmission. It ran beautifully, but there were a few issues still to iron out when I had to abandon the project for grad school. The poor thing is still waiting in my garage for me to come out and work on it again.

Seeing your post made me want to go pay it a visit....

I have been busy with using, repairing, and using it Rolling Eyes

I will have to spend some considerable time uploading pics in the near future when I get some time. Here is some update for you, though.

I spent a lot of time learning the ins and outs of the 4bbl holley carb on the engine. I have it finally dialed in pretty well. The bus sounds mean and kicks serious ass Smile Drives like a dream. I can cruise at 80mph all day, up hill. However, I believe I will be installing an external oil cooler (maybe tranz cooler as well) this week as my oil temps spike pretty high under load (240F which is considered the high end of normal). Normally, it is at about 180-220. CHT is awesome! I have never seen over 350 F and it was in the low 90s ambient and I was going up hill.

The most recent events are kind of a bummer. My tranny oil pan has been leaking so I removed it to change the seal. I found a lot of metallic dust in the pan and some pieces of unknown black, brittle stuff. I rebuilt the auto tranz and nothing in it matches what I found in the pan. Also, I do not see where the metal could be coming from. I am pretty sure it is the torque converter, but I am hesitant to trust the tranny now. I also burned the fluid pretty well on my hour long, fast, freeway trial. Rolling Eyes I am working on this. I have little time before I move and need the bus, I may have to toss some credit at it Sad

The latest, I installed speakers in the doors into some new Werksburg panels, and replaced the turn signal and washer switches tonight. It was nice doing nonessential work.

I need to raise the front as the bus is stink bugging pretty badly. My to do list is comprised of:

Fix oil leaks
Fix tranz Crying or Very sad
Oil cooler
Install larger front sway bar
Fix horn
Speedo (odo not working)
Ashtray mount (for cup holder)
Front dome light
Kick panels
Engine bay covers ( werksburg set)
Insulation – everywhere
Rear seat belt bolt hole
Remove and replace under coating in front wheel wells
Clean and tint remaining windows
Install tow bar

That is about it for now.

Interesting...As I was removing the axles from the adapters, the plastic plugs that hold the grease in were either gone or being eaten through Shocked That means that the axles are pushing too far inward. AHHHH! Now what. I wonder if I got the wrong axles way back. I just shipped my stock tranny today, I wish I would have measured the distance between the flange surfaces so I could compare to the PG setup. Sad Time to do some research.

What are you referring to?

Tonight, the weather caused me to take a break. Thunderstorms are no fun to work under your bus in. I will try to get one or both of the axles off tonight if I start to feel like getting dirty again (worked on Suby all day). I need to measure them to answer some questions. Maybe I put one of the CVs together wrong on each? I had to assemble one on each as they came apart during shipping Rolling Eyes

Well, the tranny is out, apart, and I see one issue with how somethings didnt work correctly inside (moved circlip). The left axle is 18.75" as it is supposed to be and the CV joints are fine. I hate being confused. I will remove and investigate the other side to be thorough.

It looks like the FMBC where I was hosting the pics dumped them. I dont know why. Way too many to upload all of them now. I will get around to it someday (when I am not working 80 hours, or on the damn bus). I will just start a gallery here. Anything you want to see in particular I can see if I still have.

yeah no doubt - pictures are gone? I just read this thread the other day

A 6 cylinder turbo corvair engine with reverse rotation cam and adapter plate came up for sale locally, I hoped I could see what was all involved!
