I'm putting a tranny from an '87 in my '81 westy and the bushings for the later model shift linkage seem to be NLA every where. Any NOS out there any where, or is anyone out there makin' new ones?

There is a thread about this exact problem. Use the search function and type linkage bushing.

I typed in linkage bushing and got your post. I've looked at all the bushing threads and they are all about early bushings. I NEED the LATER ones.

If you part #'s sign on to Vag-cat

No, that's not the shift shaft support bushings--and not what he needs.

Your looking at the trans coupling bushings at the Van Cafe's web page.

http://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.com

I spoke to the local VW field rep today about the above site. These old parts are being made for us again. Just like Mercedes does. In the mean time one may have to make do in other ways. But, hopefully, not for long.

In Europe they have transparent access to the classic parts. Now we need to figure out how to do that for the US!

The market in Europe is the same as here.

The bushings;251 711 207 D are NLA there too---

You can still get the designated rear bushing only--which requires two rubber boots to keep the road garbage outa the bushing.
The boots have been NLA for some time.

What may not be too transparent is the cheater's your wearing to read the decsription of the parts.
Take a long look at the decription of the J10893 bushing.

What does it say at the very end of the ad?

Oh--Out of stock.

The transparent market in the Motherland is dry too.

Drop Just kampers an e-mail - they can be very helpful and are usually pretty good at identifying if stock is likely - if not they usually just drop the part from their stock list - they have the bellows too (these I think are a copy part...but they fit well).

I can't remember if the part actually was OEM like the add suggests - best to ask them.

Only got mine about 6 weeks ago - perhaps I was just very lucky....

parts from germany. http://en.serial-kombi.com/

80-83.5 http://en.serial-kombi.com/volkswagen-transporter-1980-91-shift-bracket-1980-7-1983-N31923.html

83-91 http://en.serial-kombi.com/volkswagen-transporter-...31937.html

or just the 83+ ball http://en.serial-kombi.com/volkswagen-transporter-1980-91-gearshift-lever-ball-1980-1991-N39781.html

though I don't understand why the gearbox mounts are soo expensive, they're ~$35 here in the states.

We just got in a shipment of these but sold them out quickly. If you need one of these just message me and I am putting in another order probably tomorrow or Friday. They usually get here in less than a week. I am selling them for $29 each.

I just got a load of custom machined Delrin shift shaft busings .
They are the same size & shape as VW pt# 251- 711- 207 -D.

Being made out of delrin they'll last an awfully long time--probably longer than your Van.

Take a look over at the Vanagon parts section here at the Samba.com for picture's & details.

This is the best way to go for a long lasting fix of those worn out shift shaft bushings in your 85.5 to 91 Vanagon.

I'm still working on the earlier bushings--it'll be a little while longer.

The term to use with this new set of shift linkage support bushings installed is;
Wow.

I have been belingered with all kinds of possible fixes.
PVC tubing, heater hose, rubber bushings I found mentioned here as well as other Vanagon forums.

I will say this.
TK did his homework on the replacement bushings.
I have not had my Van shift as effortlessly since I purchased it 8 years ago.
I know where the shifter is going, it shifts crisp, and the linkage is tight.
This must be the way it was when the Van was new.
The easy, makeshift, attempted repair's up until this point have been a total waste of time, and short lived.
The new bushings were delivered in two days after I ordered them and other than the gas tank drop for the front bushing, was a simple operation.
The new bushings totally surround the shift shaft and support the shift rod the full length of the bushing, and have the right amount of clearance in the bushing to allow easy rotational movement of the rod.
Nice touch .

I highly recommend this shift shaft update.
It's impossible to explain how nice the shifting is now.
You would have to experience the feeling to appreciate it.

Thanks again TK.
