Cool, I ended up buying a pair of 6x9's and making a rear shelf myself. I'm just finishing a lower mount. The back rests on the window sill and the area by the seat has little legs so I didn't do any drilling, I cut them at a slight angle so the shelf rests tipped in, I liked the look and maybe it will throw the sound better we'll see. Not sure about MB Quart, seems like a newer brand... I was going for Polks but it was out of my price range, and all in the end it matters what sounds good to us individually, and our music taste... but these sounded really nice to my ears so I bought em!
I covered it with headliner fabric and used 1/2" thick wood, pine or something I forget, who knows.

If it is of any help, here are details of what the previous owner did to install my rear speaker shelf.
I am not sure why the speakers are not centered in the holes. ~shrug~ It still sounds fairly nice. |
Im think of doing the same thing, but Im afraid of hitting the body with the L Bracket bolts. How long are yours?? What size do you think I'll be safe with? |

i have thought long and hard on this issue and searched the web and many catalogs and decided that 50 bucks for a flimsy cardboard with black vinyl that everyone else had wasn't for me so i came up with this...
its just 3/4 inch plywood with a coat of semi gloss spray paint on it not sure if you can tell from the image but the grain of the wood shows through and hell i kinda like it...
then i remembered that someone at a show said they ran in to something and their shelf and seat flew forward and wacked 'em in the coconut, so i thought I'd stick some hood pins "like the hot rods have" on there, only thing is they only come in one size so i fashioned my own smaller version, out of some nuts and bolts and some big washers
heres how the brackets look underneath i also put a little cabinet handle in the middle to make it easier to open up
the whole shebang folds forward with some hinges that attach the self to the top of that back seat. I figure the whole thing coast about 30 bucks and i had a whole lot of fun sorting it all out. |

Well here's mine, finally... Merry Christmas to me
Sony Xplode CD deck with AUX input, two Xplode 6.5" 2 ways in the front kick panels, two Xplode 6x9 3 ways in the rear deck, two 10" Kenwood subs in the box. Amp mounted to the rear panel of the box. Rear shelf bracketed to the Sub box then 'set' on the rear window sill.
I built the rear out of 1/2 plywood, shaped it to the body line directly below the rear window then carpeted it to match the existing sub box. Also carpeted the kick panels and glued extra carpeting to the back of the kick panels and to the wall behind them.
The head unit and the Xplode speakers all came in a $90 kit from WalMart, the panel was $8 for a mini 2'x4' sheet of plywood at Home Depot. The carpet was $10 for more than enough for two two rear shelves, the kick panels and some left over. The subs, amp & box I got in trade for a pair of heads I wasn't going to use.
The rest of the interior will be done someday...

I just put this together in my car. I used the TMI speaker shelf you can find on all the online stores. I think it turned out nice, I mounted the speakers underneath the fabric so you can't see them from the outside.

That looks really nice. I've been looking for a way to get good sound without having obvious speakers. How do the speakers sound firing through vinyl? Are you still getting good high frequencies? |

My car has no backseats. I have a roll cage so i had to customize a box.
I started by building a pretty simple box.
I used a dremel to shape the end of a couple 2x4's to fit flush in the back.
I mounted some premade 6x9 boxes and bracketed them into the box i built.
I slapped a trap door on there with a pretty cheap hinge. (all the wood was scrap except one sheet of that mdx stuff. together it was like 20 bucks.
finally i locked the shallow mount fosgate 12" sub in behind the roll cage, and finished it off with some oatmeal square weave carpet I got from Pacific Jbugs. They sell extra stuff by the yard. It's kind of expensive. But it looks really good especially if you can match it to your carpet. (they also sell carpet kits and i did the whole interior with the carpet for a uniform look)
The 6x9's are Kenwood.
Finally I cut the trim cord off some of the extra carpet i had laying around (from a second carpet kit which got ruined in my garage) ALWAYS KEEP EVERYTHING! pack rats win every once in a while i guess
Then i installed the amp and a fire extinguisher on the underside of the trap door and lined it with that aluminum roof liner stuff. (stuff is awesome for sound dampening)
