I want something with rumble at idle, not just at WOT like the QP. I have some cheap stock bolt on replacement ("GT Sport Style" ... got it from MAM) ... the thing is pretty crappy and probably gives no performance gain, but the sound is nice.

I'm planning on getting a header, dual Weber 40 IDFs, and I need something other than a QP to get.

I love the sound of a Stinger, but it's too obnoxious looking for me.

Even the high hp stroker vw's with a phatboy exhaust don't really rumble at idle. The only exhaust to do that would be a stinger.

Nothing similar to a stinger that doesn't stick out like a tail, is there by any chance?

You can get a header with glass pack exhaust.I think cb performance sells them.I am working on a car with that exhaust right now and it has a good sound when you rev it out and are on the throttle. But isn't all that loud at idle.

try buying a stinger and have a muffler shop modify it to the left or right side under the rear apron

I posted a thread weeks ago, complaining about the common aftermarket offerings. Decided to make my own:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Cost about the same as the ceramic-coated Fat Boy/Mondo: $150-ish altogether, including the coating (done locally) and shipping costs.

Muffler: Moroso Spiral-Flow, 2 1/2" in/out - $56 (note: they're available in stainless... $90)
Tubing: Summit 180° J-bends x 2, 2 1/2" - $48
Silver ceramic coating: C&A Automotive, Mountain Home, Idaho - $50

Nice, rumbly idle, turning to a sharp rasp at 3k rpm or so. Minimal interior resonance, terrific ground clearance. I have a vid of it on my YouTube channel (Alisterwolf66), but it doesn't do justice. Similar in sound to a Flowmaster 40-series, but a bit raspier and more aggressive. Not so obnoxious you'll have the neighbors complaining, though.

In hindsight, a pair of 'normal' short-leg U-bends would have had plenty of material. So there's a few bucks you can save.

I didn't cut the flange bend at an angle, as do EMPI and Bug Pack, so the 180° bend sticks out a bit further than their setups do. Otherwise, everything sits under the apron, out of the way. Also, that's a 1 5/8" merged header - collector flange is a couple of inches behind the apron. With a "normal" header and smaller tubing, you should be able to almost tuck everything behind the apron.

If you use the sidewinder header you wouldn't have that huge U sticking out of the back of your car.

No I'm talking looks. and the big fat pipe hanging out the back doesn't look very good IMO. People drop 4-5 grand on their engine and only want to shell out $50 for the exhaust? $300 for a quality header is definitely fair especially when it tucks up nicely under the body.

The A-1 Sidewinder costs well over $500, with the muffler, in ceramic-coated mild steel. And it can't be used with either the factory or big-tube bolt-on heater boxes. So; I should spend another $500 I don't have, on a header I don't need, while simultaneously losing winter heat for the car and making valve adjustments more difficult?

Hotrodvw got it right - apples and oranges.

My whole point was to demonstrate to Donnie that he can build his own setup, should he not find anything he likes.

Sounds pretty nice! Wish there was a big-tube header offered which would exit at the stock cutouts and didn't cost a small fortune... maybe one of these days I'll get a bunch of tubing and bends and try making one.

Regarding the oil temp sensor (dunno if you posted this elsewhere) - VDO makes a much smaller sender than that one - you may find the small one to be easier to find a location for. You running a sump?

Mine's mounted to the cast-in bung found on the side of CB Performance's 1 1/2qt sump.

If you plan on purchasing an array of pre-bent exhaust tubing, go with these guys; Columbia River Mandrel Bending 1-800-615-tube. Shipping through the postal service, payments through PayPal, good prices, and a wide assortment of material/sizes to choose from. I've done a couple purchases from them and was more than pleased each time. They even reimbursed the difference of the shipping cost when the quoted price on their website was higher than it should. Quality bends too. I will be making another purchase in the near future for the next Hayabusa muffler installation.
Here's a couple pics from my last installation;

Hotrod, perhaps your shipping incident caused an improvement to their shipping policy. If so, then many thanks to you. It's unfortunate that you had to have a bad experience just so the rest of us can enjoy better shopping. Thanks for the heads-up on shipping costs.
Aloha!
John

I live 2hrs south of them, and went round and round with them about raping me for shipping costs. I bought (1) V-band set up from them, they wanted to charge me $14 to ship it.......rediculous. I e-mailed the shipping mgr, and after a few e-mails back and forth, he made it right. All I'm saying is, watch the shipping costs!

Cute set up!

I'd buy from them again, but if they try to pull a fastone on the shipping, I'll call them on it again. I'm not against them making a profit, just not all of it on me. Laughing I simply explained that I can ship that item in a flate rate box all day for about 5 bux........not $14. The shipped it for $5.95, I was cool with that. The guy I dealt with was really cool, he understood. Maybe I've prompted them to look at it again. They told me the costs were generated from shipping calculators.........Blah!

I've done the same with mine, almost a year ago now. Makes a nice rumble at idle, and screams if you romp on it, but looks stock. Wink

Same here. The Gt is about the only option for a 4 into 1 that exits stock cutouts that has good ground clearence. It flows pretty good with the baffels removed. Quite surprised. There are a couple of things I dont like about it though. Its rusting really quickly, well it is an Empi and a cheap system so enough said there.
I had to flatten one of the pipes to fit a full flow pump cover.
Two of the pipes touch and vibrate making a horible noise. That was sorted by strapping the two together.
The tail pipes were welded on too much of an upward angle and hit the rear apron making a bad noise. I had to bend the apron outwards to give enough clearence.
If they could get it right I would buy another but this things starting to piss me off. I think I am going to get a stainless hidaway next time, well very soon actually. But I do like the design, performance and sound of this system apart from all the problems.
