with the gear in neutral (or park if automatic) and the parking brakes full on run a small screw driver between the white arrows. Does the starter turn over the engine?
If no: try it again but this time also with your volt meter beween the large post and ground. What does the voltage do when you try it?
If yes: then you either have a bad ignition switch, wires between or if an automatic your neutral switch is bad. (I assume VW like most cars have a neutral switch if automatic).

I'd defo replace those cables as Randy says. In fact if they are replaced and it does the trick (which I would very much hope it does) then thats pretty much your best case scenario cost wise anyway... |
true, I had some clicks from my system, so I got replacement connectors for the battery posts. that fixed it.. _________________ 78 hightop 2.0 FI

If it turns over then it will be between the wire running forward to the ignition switch and that connector you jumped between. Put your voltmeter between ground and the wire coming out of the ignition switch that runs back to the starter. Turn the key. Do you have 12V? If no then the ignition switch or connector is bad. If yes check next at the neutral switch and see if you have voltage on the ignition switch side. If yes check next the other side of the neutral switch. In yes keep moving back towards the starter looking for where it might be broken. If no then the neutral switch is bad.
Basically you are following the path 12V takes to see where it is disappearing. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

its the switch, we adjusted it and it fired right up, now my question is can i bypass the switch? Does it really need to be there? And if so, where can I get one? Id rather just bypass the thing completely. |

Of course you can bypass it
Mine was bypassed at the shifter base. When my bay was converted to manual it retained the auto loom so a couple of wires were connected together.
you'll probably have to check a manual to know which colours are right for your model. |

Mine is also bad (half worn out). Did you get a hat shape brass contact piece attached to the shift rod? I'd like to know where to get it.
Thanks. |

I do not know if this will work for you but make sure that your shifter handle is on all of the way. There is a set screw on the handle. Loosen it and push the handle down onto the shaft as far as it will go. Then retighten the screw. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

First let me sayI apologize for the Hijack but I beleive the OP may be done. I have a 1970 Bus manual that has similar problems. I am about to try all the hints that are relevant to a manual Thursday afternoon (dark here now). I do however, have an electrical question. I tested the battery and received 12.76 v across the terminals. I tested at the ground bolt and postive termial and received the same voltage. When I checked at the frame (scraped paint away to get metal) I received 0 V , this was right beside the ground bolt... Would this mean that the ground is not working properly? I am not familiar with electrical stuff but can follow the execellent instructions you guys have given so far. Bus had been started just fine until recently.. I am thinking (hoping) may be a bit of corrosion. To be on the safe side I went ahead and purchased new starter . cables, ignition. However this is somewhat I moot point because I want to learn a bit as well. |

If you were measuring between the ground bolt and the frame it would be zero. If you were measuring between 12V terminal and the the bolt, then 12v terminal and frame, then it sounds like either that bolt connection is bad or you didn't scrape enough paint away. If the bolt has a good connection to the frame, it would have the same voltage. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |
