Swapped out a banged up stock shifter for a Gene Burg shifter. It seemed ok but some times I would grind downshifting into second. Thought I might me out of alignment and be hitting reverse.
So I started to play with it. Had no luck so I pulled the shifter off and thought I would clean it all up and re-grease it all.
Now I get reverse when I think it's in second I don't have to push the button in or anything. Keep tinkering with it and moving the shifter right and left and slipping the plate around but know luck. It's worse now then when I started.
The bentley manual just talks about marking the plate before removal, oops to late.

How do I reset the dam thing and get it aligned properly?

this thread looks similar to your problem:

and this is how the shift plate is set up:

When removing the gearshift assembly, note how the shift stop plate underneath the main cover is oriented – the tabs are pointing upwards and the ramped section is positioned forward and to the right. It is important that it not be put in backwarads when you reassemble things or you will not be able to get the car into reverse.

My EMPI shifter is doing the same thing. Grinding when downshifting into 2nd, and sometimes popping out of first with a loud bang. Reverse, 3rd and 4th seem fine. First can be fickle to get into especially if the car is rolling. Anyone have any direction that I may adjust the shifter? The plastic coupler in the back looks new.

I read this somewhere but can't remember this way that worked for me. Loosen up the shifter plate and push the stick in 1st gear hard and snug it up while holding a strain on the stick. Never have a problem shifting. Jeff

If you have trouble getting into reverse... Slide the base of the shift towards the right (away from reverse).
If you have trouble getting into 2nd... slide the base toward 4th.
If you have trouble getting into 1st & 3rd... slide the base rearward towards 2nd & 4th.
