|
|
I am so frustrated I could scream (actually I have, several times). I can't seem to find insurance for a restored vehicle that will be a daily driver and not garage kept. I don't have a garage and intend to drive my restored '62 panel/camper at least 250 miles a week (12000+ a year). It was ok when I was driving an OG '71 westy, but put in a year of your sweat and completely restore a vehicle and you aren't supposed to drive it. Friends have suggested I simply lie or misinform the insurance company and carry on. But I am afraid that if I were to need the insurance and were denied for any reason, I would be really screwed. I would rather be under-insured but covered that denied completely.
Any thought or suggestions? I will need to be on the road by next Mon. so I am about out of options.

I was gonna try taking some classic car value print outs along with some sale ads from the classifieds of singles in similar condition as mine to my insurance co. and tell them I want full coverage and see if they will work on a set value with me. Don't know if it will work, but worth a try since I'm drivin around with basic coverage now. _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

Just insured my 57 SC for 20K through a specialty company recommended by Farmers insurance. There is a "garage clause" but I do not remember mention of a mileage restriction. I get my policy in @ 10 days so I will try to fill in the gaps then....only $178.00/year. They said they could insure a PU but not a Bus...I asked about it but they were kind of vague. I will ask again. I also inquired about classic car insurance for my 1991 Westfalia and they advised that it is now available.
I did include a packet of printouts from TS and CL with comparable condition vehicles as well as about 50 pics of its condition. _________________ Happiness=Portland, Oregon in the rearview mirror! |

State Farm did me up for 25K. Just added it as an individual policy. (Wifey has her own for the Honda). Took photos, and that was it. I really need to get it appraised because I have more than that into it, but hey.
No mileage restriction. _________________ Kevin Albrecht

Yeah, statefarm kicks ass. I have 2 cars and a motorcycle insured through them and their office is rite up the road. I've been insured by them for 19years now and never had any problems with them, so I think they'll be more then happy to work with me exspecially since my last claim was over 10 years ago LOL!! _________________ Hoockd on fonicks werkt for mee?

When you have a "special" insurance on your ride is it agreed value, stated value or just a regular policy? Only one will pay anywhere near the value of the vehicle in a claim. Specialty insurance has restrictions for a reason. Usual restrictions include NOT used to go to work or school and garage kept (high theft target) and some restrict milage. Know what you are paying for and what will happen in the event of a claim. |

Get at least two appraisals. You will need them regardless of what you insure it for.
If you read the "fine" print on any collector car insurance, like Hagerty, you can insure for a stated value, however when it comes time to pay it they will order an appraisal. Its stated in your policy this way.
So no matter what get at least two appraisals, regardless if it is a regular auto policy or collector insurance. The money spent now will pay off later if a claim should arise. _________________ 4 cylinders of smiles.. |

FWIW, I had the State Farm agreed value policy for collector vehicles. They sold it to me as no mileage restriction. it was about 250/year for 20k agreed value. Well, it turns out there IS a mileage restriction, and it is 2500 miles a year. my agent just didn't know this even after I asked him point blank because that was what I was looking for. To have an unlimited mileage agreed value policy with them would be over 1000/year.
I would be interested in what your policy is called if it is actually agreed value and unlimited mileage.
I would like to drive my bus more, but don't have money coming out of my ears for insurance costs.
It was less expensive for me to buy a beater to drive daily and insure the bus with Grundy. _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

I gots AAA. Current market value on all 3 of my vehicles, the '65 Dormy, the '68 Plump Truck, the '70 Bug, and the trailer even, for about $1k per year. They paid current market value for the '04 Jeep when the wife totalled it. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

I have had no luck finding any company that will cover my restored bus for a stated value. I have state farm and they will not cover it unless I use it only for car shows or parades. The main problem I am having is it is a camper and these are considered utility vehicles. I have talked with a dozen companies and they all have told me since we camp in the vehicle they would only do a basic policy, which mean that they will only pay out the depriciated value of the bus. I have tried all the major companies and also collector vehicle companies. Anyone know where esle to try. |

I just got off the phone with Geico. They will be able to insure my 78 westy as a RV/specialty vehicle. Full coverage including roadside asst. It took me a half an hour and talking to 4 people but it happened. The person who put it together for me was very nice about it. They would cover total loss as long as I can present proof of value and also they will need pics of the westy..... of course. |

I finally hooked up with Geico. For normal value on a '62. It is a little less than 300$ for 6 months. I will continue to look for insurance that will give at least a resonable amount for my bus. At least i am covered now and can drive. Tried State Farm, Progressive etc. No body wants to do an agreed value or appraised value without mileage restrictions and a garage. At least here in Florida Guess I need to find a beater bay or baja to commute with and keep the split locked away in a vault.
This sucks, but at least I won't lose my house if I have an accident. |

Hagerty.com does this as a job ... for classic cars and pleasure rides. Not sure on daily drivers.
I just insured mine for $19k through Progressive this morning. He said, "In the event of a total wreck, we will need to verify the 19k, but it shouldn't be a problem." I'm saving ebay and thesamba.com sales as proof if I ever need it. _________________ "Don't worry about people stealing an idea.
