He bought up all my 2.1 core engines within the last year and a half.
If I install any rebuilt waterboxers at my shop, they will surely be tencentlife rebuilds.
I have one scheduled for March 2011 currently.
Looking forward to it.

1984 w/1.9 manual - 7 passenger
My son and I pulled it out of the weeds about 1 year ago. It sat for 4 years prior to that.
137,000 miles with no maintenance records of any kind. It has two piece push rod tubes (I believe that is only after factory)
Here's what we've done so far.
Tune-up
Transmission seal
Clutch
New Front running lights
Front brake pads
Rear drums, cylinders & shoes.
Tires
Still trying to figure out the issue with the upper three dashboard lights.
It could use many more non-critical items but for now he's ready to roll next month when he turns 16.
I've always thought it was important to have a memorable 1st ride. It doesn't need to be expensive - just something all your bud's will remember when you get older. |

2.1L
Manual trans
Donor engine from a rolled Westy w/~150k
Owned ~8months been driving ~5months
Van 198k motor 160k
about 90 miles a day x 365 days - days off = about 25k year
reliable- this is my daily driver no tow bills thus far
In my opinion why would you put a Subaru motor in a VW you might as well put a ford motor in it. I think its kinda sacrilegious to put any think other than a VW motor in a VW, if I get to the point of needing more power I plan on beefing up a 2.1. I personally like "smelling the roses" and am very content with the power of my stock motor, it has power for when I need it and cruises beautifully when I don't. _________________ Nick

85 GL Westy
1.9
stick
265K
VW Canada rebuild at 245K. PO didn't take care at all - clueless
since I bought it 6 months ago....
top end rebuild / new AMC heads / new sensors / electrics / full gasket kit and exhaust
now purrrs like a kitten
put 2K on it since rebuild - runs great - lots of power for what it is
will change all fuel lines/pump/re-seal tank,ECU, AFM, this winter
new tent too
would never consider swapping the WBX, just wrong on so many levels
this will be my 'summer-time' toy
thanks to all who post - learning so much - from the good and the bad |

-1.9
-5 spd
-rebuilt by PO in '07 in MN
-owned 3 months
-odometer stopped working few years ago at 150k - guessing 40k more on top of that.
-have driven it 140 very enjoyable miles
-estimating we'll drive it 2k-3k miles a year
-PO spent $1200 on tune up before selling so all has been good so far |

Bone stock engined 2.1L Digifant in a Flash Silver 1987 Westfalia GL with just a hair over 60,000 original miles. Automatic transmission, about 17-18 MPG. I love the shit out of that Vanagon, and I have four Split-Buses as well. I added Carat mags and a few Westfalia accessories.

90 Carat
Only vehicle / Daily driver / business vehicle / adventure mobile
wasserboxer 2.5
Very spunky I think. Definitely fires right up - always feels right.
Purchased vehicle used in '08 with the engine installed by previous owner.
In-city gas mileage is not so hot and verging on poor. Out on the highway, it gets much better.
engine maintenance since ownership: +- $225/year (including oil changes).
Money earned in billing for the vehicle for business use alone has made the purchase very worthwhile.
The 45ish nights it was my home away from home for fun last year- spectacular.
It was my dream machine in 1990 as a kid with no money. That it stokes me just the same all these years later, when I could afford something else - is significant. |

84 Westy
Manual
160K
Owned since 2003 with 112K
We have been all over Canada (except the Territories) and eastern coast of North America.
At 150k, I rebuilt top end (valve job, new rings) due to head gasket weaping. Installed a new blueprinted oil pump but it did not increase oil pressure any. Everything that I could measure in the engine was within spec.
I've done lots of preventative maintenance., and I used to carry lots of spare parts...but over time I tended to leave the spare parts at home and just bring my tools...because I never ended up needing any of them after I looked after the preventative maintenance.
Note: My coolant expansion tank sprung a leak the first year we had it, but I had a new spare with us because I knew the original one was looking suspect. (BTW my '88 Jetta blew it's expansion tank a few year back too) _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

Nothing wrong with reusing good mains, so long as you don't lie and say they're new. But if his are really new, I'd be willing to bet they're not KS. I'd take a good used KS set before any other maker's new. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

No way, reusing old mains over new? That's very good to know. I was going to use a new set of Mahle mains in my 1.9. I had also bought a set of new (nla) KS 1.9 mains still wrapped in plastic but they looked beat up. The babitt material was coming off so I returned them. The original KS mains definitely show some wear but they don't have any material flaking off like the new ones did. _________________ 84 Westy 4spd sold |
