|
|
This is my first posting, please forgive me if there is another post on this subject.
I was wondering how to connect (4) stock horns in series. Will the existing wiring suffice? Do I need to increase the gauge of the wire? What do I need to do to accomplish this? Thank you for your comments and time.
Scarlet will appreciate it. |

Yes, multiple horns would be in parallel, not series but I think that is probably what you meant.
If your objective is volume (as opposed to, say, playing the opening bars of La Cucaracha) then perhaps you would be better off with one big loud horn (or a set of loud horns) rather than more stock horns.
A pair of air horns with a discordant chord can be quite effective w/o making you sound like a diesel train. Or for that matter, there are horns that sound like a diesel train.
The size wire and relay you use will depend on the horns you select and where they are located (current draw & length of the power wire. |

alistair,
I have added dual horn from a MBZ using a relay activated by the horn pad. When I saw you web page I tried to move the relay to the fuse panel but I can not find any plug that can fit the " L " socket of the fuse panel. Where did you get the plug ? _________________ Steve

Steve,
it was just "generic" 40 amp relay. The kind that you want to grab when at the wreckers.
It went into position #6 on the panel, and it was one of those "regular" relay positions... I mean the slot arrangement.
does that help?
edit: doh, I misunderstood... you mean the molex type connection part on back of panel, position "L".
I looked in wreckers, in various audi and vw cars for a plastic mutliprong connector to fit. No luck, so I used heat shrink on the female molex on end of the wires... pinched them a bit too, and plugged them in separately. yeah, its hokey, but its working. Heads up though, 2 sizes of molex used there. Years ago I snagged an Audi 5000 fuse panel with all the connections in back. None of the blocks fit the van, but the wire pigtails with the molex connectors have been useful.

I believe that he is asking about the molex plug that plugs into the back. I also need to know where to find one. I have looked at a few electronics stores and will be going to the wreckers soon to look though jetta, golf, passat and other VW makes since they often reuse things in other models. |

Yeah, I realized that and edited.
I looked through various cars with no luck. If you strike gold, let us know. I agree that there must be one out there somewhere.

I found the perfect connector on the back of a '92 cabriolet fuse box. It clicks into place without mods and I verified continuity to the relay position so it is electrically correct. I will get some pictures up later. |

Try one of these: http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/car+accessories/exterior+accessories/ultra+compact+air+horns.do
I have the "Compact Italian Big Truck Sound Air Horn". Guaranteed to make the texting/chatting/whatever idiot in front of you flinch! I love using my horn now! _________________ 89 Syncro Westy - GW 2.5, now with a double knob job

X2 except I have the "Red, Compact Italian Air Horn". It has a higher pitch and a bit more of a sharp sound than the truck. Kinda like a really loud ferrari. Both are great ~ and lots of fun. _________________ 87 Westy, 250k GW 2.4 - 2.0 , 16" wheels |

The plug doesn't look like you would expect as it isn't L spaped but there is a factory cutout for the other leg to slip into in the fuse block.
The plug clips into place like intended
I looked into many golfs, jettas, passats and a fox and the cabriolet was the old one that had the correct plug. I don't know if it is specific to a cab or the others were just a different enough year to not have it. Happy junk yard hunting. |

Yep, I wanna put in a crap your pants horn.
You know, one that requires them to return home immediately to change clothes.
I am not a horny kind of guy but when I really must honk the thing I want to make sure they understand what I'm saying.
If a Jet Airplane had a horn that's the one I want.
Thank you,

Great stuff Syncrodoka, thanks for this.
In my old '82 westy, I had this Indian horn as well as the stock horn. It makes a very obnoxious toot. I have to get it installed in my syncro.
