My split runs fine, but sometimes I hear some kind of chirping sound from the back. It's sounds like a small bird is in the back, but I when I look it's never there. The sound is almost gone when running idle or revving the engine a little bit in neutral, so I only hear while driving. Anyone know what could be wrong? |

Probably is some loose bit of engine tin... where the engine tin screw has come loose... just rubbing at a given RPM. Check all the engine tin screws for tightness... especially the rear tin... behind the shroud.
it might be the throttle cable... rubbing in the fan shroud... or the fan itself rubbing in the shroud. |

put some drops of oil down the distributor shaft if it's dry. _________________ Extravagant Lifestyle

Thanks for the reply... I was wondering if too tight/loose valves might make this sound, but I guess not. I will check the screws and distributor shaft. |

sounds like you need some Bosch grease on the lobes of the distributor where the points ride. |

Also check your fan. It can rub on the housing at certain RPMs and create this sound.... _________________ John Henry

x2 Disconnect the fan belt and spind the generator, reach behind and move the fan thermostat ring in & out. it may be hitting the fan once it warms up. _________________ Bill |

I checked the fan thermostat ring when I heard the noise, but it was only opened a little bit (it's only 10 degrees Celcius around here).
I fastened all tin bolts (they weren't really loose), added a drop of oil to the distributor shaft, checked the fan-belt (was ok) and added some oil to the engine (it was nearly at the bottom mark).
Today I drove around 100km and I didn't hear the sound anymore. Thank for the solutions. _________________ VW Split Beetle (1950) |
