Late-50s/early-60s Singer Gazelle, NOT a Sunbeam Rapier. The grille on the Rapier was a little different, as was the dash.

The one shown is Ned Curtis' Le Mans Replica (s/n 421 100 119) as it appeared at the inaugural Los Angeles Grand Prix, August 30, 1997.

This thing is like an optical illusion to me--I follow the lines expecting to see a certain shape but nope.

Hint: from a country that figured prominently in the Beetle's early post war history.

Front view would give away the maker as its name is prominently displayed in the grille.

My first thought is Lancia, but your hint blows that away. I have no idea.
