I have two, one has a indent on the left side of the center indentation. This one goes straight up and down. I am not sure and can't seem to find the info that will confirm if this is, in fact, the right one I would need for a 64 1500cc. I also thought it was strange that there is only one side that had the bendable tabs.

I believe that the indent is correct but I am not 100% sure. Maybe 99%
The dealer replacement 1500cc engine in my '63 has that shroud.
Yes, it has no wire holder on the left side.
The shroud above is for use with flaps, correct?
My 5/64 all original Bus did not have flaps, it had the throttle ring on the rear. As far as I know, all 64s still had a throttle ring on the back of the shroud, not flaps. Flaps were introduced for 1965. _________________ How to Post Photos

What the flap are you talking about? I can't say I have enough knowledge to know the difference between the throttle ring and a flap. My iPhone sucks to bad to even try and look it up. _________________ 64 Type II

ealy buses have a ring controlled by the thermostat.
later buses have flaps controlled by the thermostat.
It regulate sthe amount of air blown over the heads.
The change from ring to flaps was early in fresh air 40hp production AFAICT. I thought all 1500s had flaps. Never looked it up, but have seen 40hp tin both ways. IIRC, I have seen a 40hp cylinfer tin that could go either way.
having the complete thermostat set up helps the engine reach proper temp asap. this reduces wear, without it life is reduced. in winter, engines can remain below optimal temp if you don't have the thermostat. Your heater will emit cooler air without it, reducing your comfort. Evidently the flaps also help the engine cool better in hot weather too. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Well, golly gee whillikers. Info in a reference book.
trying to remember if I have ever seen an original to the bus fresh air 40hp engine all dressed original. Definately a rare bird.
seen a lot more piles of tin. Mark Zehner had a big pile of tin last time I was at his shop (RIP Mark) Had the oddball 40hp tin I mentioned.
So, 1500 cylinder tin and fan shroud for use with the throttle ring.
That'll give you an excuse to dig through tin at the swaps!

Ok so the flaps play an important role in engine cooling and warm up. Now how about worn flaps where the shafts the flaps are welded to in the flap boxes that have worn shaft holes? Does anyone repair those or just let go with the thought of .....if you have flaps and a working thermostat, your good? _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I woke up about 3am with a ohhhh kind of moment. I remember seeing a fan shroud with the flaps but have never seen them on my bus. This is the original motor and I would love to get it back to 100% stock! In 84' my uncle cut the back of the original tin to put an awesome oil-cooler on. I don't remember seeing the flaps or any of the mechanisms that went with it when I pulled the original tin. When I first started rebuilding this bus, I may have been misinformed about a thing or two. I am going to dig through the barn and (hopefully) find the tin I pulled off to match up.
So the general consensus is, the tin is correct for the year/motor but I need the flaps for the T-stat? _________________ 64 Type II

Thank you Clara... That pretty much answered all of my original questions. I now have new ones though, lol.
The stove pipe(s) in that picture above intrigue me. I have the longer one but wasn't sure if it was right considering my pre-heat hose goes through the tin on the passenger side. Would I need the shorter one or does the bus require both? Trying to do this whole 100% stock thing is driving me crazy.
Thank you to everyone for your input. _________________ 64 Type II

The stoves pipes... My mom had a 67 beetle. She bought it from the original owner in '98. The original owners manual had dealer stampings in it every 3K miles until she bought it at 128K miles.
At some point I pulled the motor and replaced the oil seals. Then I found and installed the missing pieces ... which is what is in that picture. Ya, in spite of having a nice documented history, someone tossed this stuff. Probably when the engine was replaced with a rebuildt one.
What I have found is every motor I replace the oil seal in has missing tins. So I collect them, and when I pull the next motor I can dig them out and install the pieces. Then things warm up better, and cool better.
There is a ton of tin minutia. Go through the owners manuals
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type2.php
and compare as they change every few months. Check out PR for changes in the motor section.
The 67 beetle has dual 1" pre heat, so two holes in the rear tin, and a stove pipe for each side.
This bug has correct 67 bug tin and 67 bug air cleaner, is missing hose on left:
A bus only has on pre heat hose, so only one stove pipe. Well, 36hp didn't have pre-heat. Bastard 40hp didn't either. There were stale air 40hp buses with the pre-heat hooked to the left heater box. Then at some point they changed to a stove pipe on the left, then ~ early 66 they changed to a stove pipe on the right, then in late 66 they stuck the hose on the right heater box.
Greg was trying to get the Cragar Kombi's motor dressed 100% correct for a 66 bus. It is pretty close, but the fuel pump is wrong, and the gen pulley is wrong, and the gen has screw connection instead of push connections. and a couple other things.
It does have the 66/early 67 bus 1500 rear tin ... hard to find.

I have the factory OG owners manual for the bus and I don't recall seeing anything about the pre-heat. I understood it as the longer one is bus and the shorter one is beetle. _________________ 64 Type II

Landon, it's gonna be tough, Most people in Sac long ago threw out the rings and flaps, because CA is one place where your vw will seem to perform ok without them. I predict you looking through piles of tin at BOR for the next couple seasons, if the stuff is not in your garage.
I think the concensous is, you need ring, not flap. What month is the bus? For anybody that hasn't seen this thing, it's a beauty, and deserves the attention to detail it's about to get from it's OCD owner _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

She is a Dec of 63, 64 model year... When you have something so original, you want to make sure that anything that was changed gets put back right! _________________ 64 Type II

Thank you for the pictures... That confirms that the fan shroud I have is correct and it will be a flap style and not ring. _________________ 64 Type II

no dude, go back to everett's scan of progressive refinements above. chassis number 215004263 Aug 3 1964 flaps inside fan - previously throttle ring in front of the fan 1200 and 1500
you need the ring dec 1963 _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

But if you have a '64 it should have the ring, not flaps... |

HAHA, this is a nightmare but thank you both for keeping me on track. I will be hunting down a ring! I have a feeling I know where to get one
