OK...The thread for this bus...for updates and progress and the quest for info.
From the bus hunting thread:

It appears I was initially incorrect on the color. It looks as though the roof and below the beltline were painted a medium blue (almost dove blue looking) and the bumpers and above the beltline are clearly a different much lighter almost sky blue. I like the fade so I don't think I want to repaint the bus or strip the repaint, but it would be neat to have it the original painted colors again.

Not really "hunted" for but I think an important find nonetheless. A good friend came across this bus only a block and a half from his house, and we have just purchased it off of our friend.
59 model year (made in Dec 1958) SO-23. Primer delivered...one of few known Westfalia painted busses. Possibly the only known(?) 233 (LHD, left hand cargo door) model SO-23 camper (none listed in the registry).
Was medium/sky blue...but repainted long ago the darker color on the outside. Hippys got a hold of it and painted it yellow and brown on the inside. Mostly all of it's reversed SO-23 kit is missing (currently having a cabinet shop copy and invert a kit from a regular LHD). Looking for any misc. interior hardware bits for it. if anyone has some please PM. Plans are to keep the patina on the outside. Paint the inside and install a fresh interior.

Started wet sanding down to the O.W. paint. Sky blue is above beltline and on bumpers. Other blue (that is on the roof and below the beltline) is showing through where I removed the aftermarket signals. Actually a really nice combination.
roof color
bumper with the above beltline (sky blue) color showing through and missing RHD tent bracket
And why an SO-23 is the perfect bus for us
Our dog "Kubelwaggin" is a brindle bullmastiff just like the one in the brochure.

Some background:
from the white roof busses thread

If you look at any collection of vintage splitscreen bus photos, you'll see a very high percentage of white roofs on buses. Especially commercial buses.
Not sure where the white came from, but it was VERY common back in the day. I'd guess dealer and owner painted, not factory, but I have no information to prove it, other than photos of factory buses being shipped.
Do any of the factory shipment photos show white roofs? I can't recall seeing any.
Some of the very early Westies had the lower color, upper beltline color, and roof painted the lower color.

Ok I was waiting for that one...
That is NOT a white painted roof bus. That is a bus delivered to Westfalia in factory primer. It was then painted at Westfalia in their own color schemes. That bus is like a beige ivory on top, sliver blue in middle and beige ivory again on bottom. This was only done to very early westfalias to about `58. These buses are M-coded for factory primer only and the interiors are even brush painted in the tan westfalia paint! Greg and Lind can verify this info for you.
I actually owned a very early `58 westfalia that was done in this paint scheme. In fact I remember way back in the day schooling greg-campingbox on this when he just bought his `56 westy. He found it hard to believe me when I told him that tan brushed paint inside of his westy was factory...of course now it is common knowledge with westy guys. |

the '51 deluxe buses had a three tone paint scheme.
the westfalia painted buses had the two tone scheme with the roof being painted the same color as below the beltline.
those cases are well known and documented. the life pictures are august '51 I believe. there are many period pictures of the westfalia painted early westies, and I don't think that more than a couple hundred of them ever even existed. less than ten are known to exist today.
I have never seen anything convincing on any other buses. I have seen several buses that had their roofs painted white later in life, but the paint quality was obviously not VW factory. I would be very surprised to see anything that was VW factory paint with a white roof (other than a pearl white bus of course... ) |
There are I believe 10 known RHD so-23's. This bus appears to be the only known 233 model so-23. It was delivered to South Sweden. Color code is "Grund"=primer.
It is believed Westfalia stopped painting busses around 1958. This bus was built Dec 8th, 1958.
There seems to be a few variations from some other known Westfalia painted busses. Thus far I haven't found any traces of the westfalia tan in the cab area. The interior in the back was painted westfalia tan. The cab seems to have been painted blue....including the door and kick panels, and sun visor. This bus appears to have been painted with the headlights in (they didn't even remove the headlight to body seal), and bumpers (or at least the front bumper) on. Campingbox said his two Westfalia painted busses were painted headlights out and bumpers seperately. _________________ "Love and good roads" |

This bus is officially kicking my ass now. I was getting screwed up as there are no clamshell lights (or holes or harness), the rear seat brackets were in the wrong place, theres no holes drilled for the tables, it had some crazy rear seat support I thought someone added......until I saw this picture today....
and reckognized the rear seat support.
This one's going to be a learning curve for me.

Sorry...we've been distracted. We actually sold off a bunch of VW's to focus on this bus, and then we bought a 1940 Merc convertible so this bus is on hold again.
It's actually a "Standard" Campingbox. Once we figured that out I started this thread to try and get some more info on them:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=479038&highlight=standard+campingbox
Collecting parts was holding us up too. Have to source some Limba among other things. We were also desperately trying to get some measurements we needed from the few that are out there, and by some crazy circumstances came to own this bus:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=552412&highlight=standard+campingbox
so now we at least have an appropriate template to copy. We do hope to get back on it soon. _________________ "Love and good roads" |
