|
|
I have slight clutch chatter, letting out on first , so one of the things I'm checking is the housing that runs thru the tunnel. My first look into it from were the shift coupler/trans connection?, I see movement in the middle, it looks like maybe a common mount with other tubing? Does anyone know were exactly that mount is? I gave up for the time, _________________ 64 Beetle |

Check the rear weld on the tube where it comes through next to the gearbox hockey stick, that weld commonly fatigues as does the one at the front, the ultimate fix is to cut a hole in your tunnel and make a bracket that secures the middle of the tube also, wled it to the floor or wall of the tunnel to prevent flex. _________________ Aust. There are good instructions here... http://www.thebugshop.org/gotech.htm
scroll down to 'clutch tube reattachment'. If you can weld it is a fairly straight forward job. Or strip the car, cut the tunnel and drive it to the welder. |

We'll, after reading the above link, I cut an access hole into the tunnel last night. I could look into the tunnel from the shifter coupler hole and see the housing move, so hence the access hole. What is different on this 63 bug versus the above link is- my mid mount just below the back of the parking brake, looks like it is a floating mount? It is a piece of flat stock about 3/4'' wide and it looks like it's brazed (not welded) too the clutch cable housing, the throttle cable housing and both of the heater cable housing. Which all looks OG. When the clutch is pressed you can see the whole mount assemble move up and down about 3/4"-maybe up to an 1" deflection. This combination/floating mount is about 3/4" off of the tunnel flooring, and shows no evidence of ever being welded to the floor, and the whole assemble is about 1 " short of either side, so no attachment points there?
So I'm making a bracket that will secure the whole assemble to the lower tunnel. Also there is another floating mount about 10" or so forward of the shifter? Will try and take pictures on Monday. _________________ 64 Beetle |

I find if the front, bacd are solid and the middle is welded to the floor with a bracket, there is no need to do anything with the tap forward of the e brake. 3 strong points will stop the flexing. (even with a heavy clutch) |

I finished making and installing the mount I made. The housing is rock solid now. Put everything back together and have driven about 150 miles with alot of stop and go. I can drive without clutch chatter, but it's still there. I suspect my flywheel isn't liking the aggresive clutch disc. Not going back to my diakin right away. I'm going to attack my wheel hop next. With my car being lowered in the back 1 click, my back end is kinda soft. (stock WW shocks) I'm going with 25mm torsions, and better shocks, and will see what happens. _________________ 64 Beetle |

Towd, as crazy as it sounds I had two floating mounts as I want to call them. My housing is welded up at the pedal area, and back were it exits and it had two of these strap steel mounts-one I could see looking thru the shifter hole slightly forward (couldn't reach in and touch it)but were I cut into the tunnel(just back under the parking brake)I could reach in and it wasn't even close to the sides and about an inch off of the floor and no evidence of being welded. but the mount I made and welded is very solid. And it was a virgin tunnel. Everything I have read says there's a mount in the middle and attached? _________________ 64 Beetle |

Bad news is I still have a bit of wheel hop, good news-I installed 25mm saw torsion bars, installed bilstein shocks. I have dropped spindles and slightly adusted lower in the front. The back is lowered about an inch, with the rear tires having a slight negative chamber, 165, and 145 michlins, and its a great ride at the moment, nice and firm, not harsh at all. _________________ 64 Beetle |
