And I do plan to drill a little hole in the thermostat. I remember that being a part of the process in my dad's WRX 914 that Jeff built. |
Genuine thermostats have a hole in them already for bleeding out any air with a rattle pin in them which blocks the hole off while the engines running. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

I bought a new thermostat from the Subaru dealer, and come to think of it, I did notice that little rattle pin. I'm glad Nick brought it up, because I would have drilled a hole in it. Thanks Joel! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Got it running today! Don't worry about the little fireballs blowing out of the open header. I know they're pathetic, so I'll be sure and tune it for larger fireballs.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlVHKImHc6o
There is still no coolant in it, some stuff still needs to be buttoned up, and we've done no tuning at all, but now I know that the $180 Pick-N-Pull engine doesn't have a knock, which is a huge relief.
After we took that video, I pulled the intake manifold and crossover pipe off the engine, and painted them in wrinkle black paint. Here's the process:
Cleaned up and masked off
Two coats of VHT wrinkle black.
1 hour at 200 degrees.
Sneak peek after 30 minutes! Don't leave the oven open too long or it won't rise!
Wrinkly, just like a stock WRX manifold!
I painted over the parts of the sensors and petcock which aren't critical for contact, and not on threads. I just wanted to help hide them. They're all installed on the back side of the manifold and crossover pipe to help hide the wiring too.
I also painted the alternator belt tensioner that Jeff made for me today.
By the way, if you have a spare minute, be sure and check out Jeff's other videos. There are several other engine swapped cars in there:

Sweet!
I can't really see it in the vid, but where did you mount the coil? Did you just use the EDIS Ford coil, or the original Subaru one?
You going to change the timing belt and tensioners before beating on it?

The coil is the stock Subaru one, and it's mounted on the firewall, behind the throttle body. It's a stock Subaru throttle body too, that I just cut all the unnecessary stuff of of. I'm also using a stock Subaru TPS and crank sensor. The trick was to use an STI trigger wheel/front sprocket because it's got the right tooth pattern. I took pictures of the sprocket swap, but they're on Jeff's camera so I'll have to get them from him before I post them.
The timing belt and tensioners look and sound great, and have been changed at least once before because it's got a NAPA belt on it. I'm guessing it was less than 20,000 miles ago, by the condition. So since it's a non-interference motor, I am not going to change them right now because even if it skips a tooth, it won't bend valves.
I'll wait to do the timing belt until I put some cams in it, or turbo it, or do some other major change. I know it wouldn't be a bad thing to change the belt, but I've got to reel in the spending a little bit right now. This mad dash for the past few weeks has cost more than I was thinking it would! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Sounds like you're good to go on the timing belt. I'd only be worried if you had found the original Subaru belt on there.
What years of STI had the correct trigger wheel for Megasquirt? Does Megasquirt use the cam position sensor, too? Or are you just running batch fire with this setup?
Can't wait to see the first driving video! You're going to love Subaru power...

We are running a batch fire setup, not sequential. So yeah, it doesn't use a cam sensor, just the crank position sensor. IF you wanted to though, you could run sequential injection with Megasquirt.
I am not sure the exact years, but here's the part number for the STI trigger wheel that I got:
13021AA141
And here are some pictures comparing the stock EJ22 wheel to the STI wheel:
The way it was explained to me is that you can program the Megasquirt to use the stock EJ22 wheel as a 4 -1 setup, but cutting two of the teeth off of it. But the resolution is pretty low, so you can get hard starting conditions or a rough idle. The STI wheel is a 36 -2 -2 -2 wheel, so it has a much finer resolution.
And with it being $22 from the Subaru dealer, it's a pretty small investment for a smoother running engine.
And here's a test fit of the painted manifold:
Little hidden throttle cable stop:
A bicycle cable housing goes up into that stop, and runs down to the throttle cable tube that comes out of the pan.
I didn't like how the alternator or pulleys looked, so I have painted those and am waiting for them to dry enough for a second coat before I go to bed.
I just ordered a pair of axle assemblies from Autozone earlier today. Very pricey, but they have a lifetime warranty on them.
Considering that I am leaving stock axles on the bug to help preserve the transmission, I have a feeling I'll be using that warranty... a few times. _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Looks sweet.
Have you decided what you're going to do about the air filter?
After looking at your pics, I think I'm going to go ahead and make my rear apron removable the next time I have to pull the engine (probably when I upgrade my transmission). Looks like it makes it a lot easier to work on.
