|
|
Ok - I am a proud new owner of a 1963 Double Cab and I am currently tying to get a few bugs worked out of it.
The issue is that it appears the PO converted to a 12v system and a ton of stuff does not work. When I hook up the flasher the thing turns red hot and starts smoking (I know that is not supposed to happen). I have studied the wiring diagrams and scoured the threads. When I traced my wiring I noticed the emergency flasher relay (next the the passenger side headlight bucket) had a part number of 311-941-583a which is a headlight dimmer relay and should be a emergency flasher relay? and none of the terminal markings match the diagram it has numbers like 56a, 56, S and F. Could the headlight relay be causing my blinker issues or is it a short somewhere I have to track down.
Thanks for you input.

That is a 67 12V headlight dimmer relay for the bus. Can you show pics of your signal switch, wires, relays etc. It may be correct for the set up, but hard to tell based on your description. It could be simple, or you could have some f'd up wiring to fix. _________________

Put your lips onto the little tit with the hole in it inside and make a good seal. You can suck and blow but with a little resistance. It gets better after it's wet. |

I would be interested in knowing the sizes of the various shafts. |

Ok Here are a few pics of the flasher/headlight relay that is installed on my DC as the Emergency Flasher Realy. I messed around with the blinkers last night and burned the crap out of my finger on the 3 prong flasher box! One more thing I noticed is the the Speedo is out of a bug (the signal indicator lights are located at the bottom of the speedo instead of at the top). I think I might be better off getting new relays and re wiring the whole system!

Dual Make SPST Relay : (Single Pole Single Throw Relay) an electromagnetic switch, consist of a coil (terminals 85 & 86), 1 common terminal (30), and two normally open terminals (87 and 87b). Dual make SPST relays (Figure 4) are used to power two circuits at the same time that are normally isolated from each other, such as parking lamp circuits on German automobiles.
The diagram below center (Figure 5) shows a dual make SPST relay at rest, with the coil not energized. The diagram below right (Figure 6) shows the relay with the coil energized. The coil is an electromagnet that causes the arms that are always connected to the common (30) to pivot when energized whereby contact is made with the normally open terminals (87 and 87b).

If you use 2 of those relays it will work. You need 2 set of isolated output contacts. |

I picked up a second relay and hooked it up and everything works now!!
The reason my turn signal relay was burning up was because the battery was not tied down and it hit the back of the right rear tail light housing and shorted out the blinker wire on the housing causing the problem.
Now time to the the bus inspected and title in my name!!
Thanks for all the input

Im having similar issues right now as well. I think adding on to this thread is a better idea then starting a new one, so I apologize if Im out of place.
I have a 59 single cab, drove it to work one day, and it wouldnt start back up at the end of the day. I tried to jump the starter and got minimal spark. The battery reads 12.6V, the 30 terminal on the ignition has 12.5V on it, but when you turn the key (all the way), turn the lights on, or push the horn, everything goes dead.
After messing with it today (and becoming extremely pissed off), I turned the key one more time and the flasher started buzzing. I noted that it only has 3 prongs on it (the wiring diagram has 4), and one of the prongs has two connectors doubled up on it. Wrong flasher? and if so, would it cause the problem? Its been like this for at least 8 months and starting up just fine, with all lights working.
Any ideas? |

If I had symptoms like that, I'd start cleaning battery terminals... _________________ '61 rag top beetle, '73 type 181, '66 13 window deluxe |
