Wow. that is quite a find. Some of the uninformed responses are pretty funny.

I like this one... "Perhaps it did indeed come from a German Jeep" _________________ 1957 Karmann Kabriolet "Franky"

"Deff looks like an engine out of a Kubelwagen made by VW that was later The "Thing""
Not exactly correct.
The engine has the double groove pulleys like on a schwim. Looks like the tube that connects the air cleaner to the carb is laying on the other side right above the flywheel.
This engine is remarkably complete.
As they noted, it has a standard sedan (and Klubel?) rear pulley pan rather than the large squared off version of the later industrial engines.
It even has the super rare manifold that that kind of looks like a 36hp version that was present on the earliest engines.
Sitting in someone's basement in Alabama? These jewels are still out there.
I suspect Christian will be contacting them shortly... _________________ Chris

He might be closer to correct than you think. The Germans used those as starting/launch motors for the V2 Rocket program. Here's an old thread about it:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=214690&highlight=rocket
Don't forget that the center of the US Rocket research and the place we moved all the German rocket scientists we brought over was the Redstone Arsenal in . . . (wait for it) . . . Huntsville, Alabama!
It's not a stretch to think we brought over some V2 rockets and related parts, maybe even a few starting motors. And maybe this motor was from that program? Can't prove it, but it's as good a theory as any about why a WWII vintage industrial motor wound up in Alabama.
Quote: |
At the close of World War II, a number of key German scientists and engineers were brought to the United States under Operation Paperclip. Colonel Holger Toftoy arranged for 127 individuals, including Wernher von Braun, to receive contracts for work on Army missiles. In late 1945, they began arriving at Fort Bliss, Texas, where, using components brought from Germany, started upgrading the V-2 missile. Testing was done at the nearby White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico.[10]
On June 1, 1949, the Army Chief of Ordnance designated Redstone Arsenal as the Ordnance Rocket Center, its facility for ordnance rocket research and development. In April 1950, the Fort Bliss missile development operation, then with 130 German contract employees, 120 civil-service employees, and 500 military personnel, was transferred to Redstone Arsenal. This became the Ordnance Guided Missile Center (OGMC), with Major James Hamill as acting commander and von Braun as technical director). |

I was thinking about that thread when I saw this. I didn't know about the Alabama connection. That could explain the small gas tank mounted to the engine I suppose. _________________ Chris

Clearly on the tag: typ 120/17
So it is a stationary engine for the RLM (ministry for Air Transport), according to Barbers Birth of the Beetle. _________________ Thing stuff:

I think the gas tank is used when starting the engine in difficult (cold) weather to squirt some gasoline into the intake manifold (considering the fact that the VFIS carb was lacking an accelerator pump).
If I recall correctly, the Kubelwagen came with a small gasoline canister held with clips by the driver's A-pillar to be used exactly in the same manner. Maybe the small canister was something similar. _________________ 1965 Sunroof Beetle

The cannister to the right is an ether tank, also used on
kubels and schwimmers in cold climates...although you can imagine the military being the military they probably were fitted to the Afrika Korps vehicles, much like the sand-proofing seen on Russian front cars... Learned that from the late Ron Redmon while working on his Kubel and Schwimmer. Dave Crompton can probably confirm.
Good looking piece of equipment, funny to read the expert replies on Smokstak... |

OK, that makes sense. I don't know that much about the military vehicles but I have seen that tank mounted as you mentioned in klubels and schwims.
The more I look at that motor the more amazed I am at how original it is. It even has the special spark plug wires. _________________ Chris

If it really is off a V2 trailer or whatever, the total running time that engine has had could quite possibly be measured in minutes. |

it does have the same Magneto unit as the V2 Erector but has different sheet metal in the back:
The V2 unit has been HEAVILY restored by non-VW experts though, doesnt even have an aircleaner on it, who knows whats actually correct, its missing the side tins for the cylinder heads and the carb is painted grey, the basement find is probably more correct, they both have 6 prefix on serial number too...

Same air cleaner, no ether tank or breast plate tin. |

It is limited to 1800 rpm by the magneto so that is the max HP it will put out.
The sedan motor is rated 25 hp at 3300 rpm. _________________ Chris

Hello,
I can get a similar engine, but in very good condition.
The engine runs very well and still has the original paint with all the labels.
The air filter is slightly different, similar to the Schwimmwagen (cyclone).
I would like to buy this engine, can someone tell me what such an engine
may cost?
Thank you for your help.
Greetings Kasumi |

By similar, do you mean an industrial engine? What year? You'll need to provide more details and probably pictures to get a guesstimate. |
