Okay I am torn between a co-worker who worked the Baja 1000 and my uncle who works at Austin Veedub. My heater boxes are not hooked up at all (no pipes). I started noticing a heavy exhaust smell in the cab. One guy says plug up the heater box holes with a ball, and the other guy seems to not worry about it much. Any words of wisdom? |

Yes. Tell us what kind of vehicle you're talking about. _________________ Eric

If you have no heater boxes I would tape up the openings. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

It's a 71 Westy. There are heater boxes just no pipes running from them. So I can't get heat in the car. Any relation to the exhaust smell? |

IF there's exhaust coming out of the heater boxes... air meant to go inside the vehicle... then there's another problem somewhere.
How's your rear hatch door seal? What type of exhaust are you running? What is its condition? _________________ 1970 Westfalia Pop-Top |

learning everything from scratch. How would I figure out what type of exhaust I'm using and condition? The rear hatch is perfect. |

Do you have a single exhaust pipe coming out on one side? Or two pipes straight out the back like a bug? And I didn't mean the hatch itself, but the seal around the hatch. The aerodynamics of the bus will push exaust through that hatch at speed if the seal isn't any good. _________________ 1970 Westfalia Pop-Top |

So here the heater box and the missing pipe. Today I shoved a tennis ball in there to see if that would help and than drove to work. I wasn't smelling a lot of exhaust but still some. Got a headache when I got out of the car. Is this psychosomatic or what?

The rear hatch seal is like this on all four corners[/img] |

you need to tape them up until you get the system fixed before you kill your self. The headache is likely carbon monoxide poisoning. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I doesn't look like much is missing with your heater boxes. The heater boxes look in great shape, and the heater control cables are even there. I'd definitely block it off immediately and start sourcing the parts.
As far as your rear window seal goes, if you have an air compressor you might try blowing so air around the seal with someone inside on the back side of the window checking if they feel any air coming through. If you don't have a compressor, maybe you could do the same thing with a hose? But definitely get those heater tubes sealed up and that should take care of the majority of your problems. _________________ 1978 Westfalia |
