I'm pretty sure DP owned this bus at one point.....the first time I ever heard of it when some clown had a flyer advertising it for sale on the back of his squareback at Jerome. |

Speaking of Elvis, what ever happened to him? I remember him listing VW's for sale all the time... or was it pictures in the gallery all the time? Either way, where's he at now? _________________ -Andrew |

| I remember when Charlie Hamill gave it an award at the OCTO 1999 June Anniversary Meet, He said something like " award for the best 51,54 57,64,67 bus in attendance" sort of like Laugh In's "fickled finger of fate award" alot of pretense with little substance! |

Elviz is not dead!
Elviz is up north somewhere doing computer stuff. I remember his family or family member did something big up in Silcon Valley? He's not pimping cars anymore. Good guy! |

Hi Tonny- As best I know, that Bus is actually a real Barndoor 23 Window Deluxe and always has been. It's just that somebody put a Kombi or Standard VIN tag from a 1951 on it and now it's "said" to be a 1951 Deluxe. I had a lengthy talk with some of the biggest Bus specialists on Earth and they pointed out some details that make it virtually impossible for it to be a true 1951 Deluxe. If it is, it has more wrong than right and is a pure "mutt" (mixed breed of dog). The roof is not the early pre 1952 "Deep-set Skylight" roof, the ebrake is the later longer style and the shifter is the later longer one as well. Those kinds of details aren't likely to change, no matter how much work was needed. There was a long list of stuff but I don't recall them all. Bottom line, the Bus had some 1951 features, lots of 1954, some 1964, and a whole mix of others. In my personal opinion it's just a shame that this very unlikely "1951" Deluxe is potentially getting recognized as the "World's Oldest Deluxe" when it's probably not that at all.
Lind, what do you know about this? I'm sure you've heard at least some of the same. |
Could anyone explain me what this means, maybe with a pictures.

The thing is that I'm acctually thinking the other way, BD spindles and tranny + axles on a early beetle...
This is why I chase for some facts about the interchangability of parts and hope for only minor machining to make it work. |
I was thinking of doing the same thing with the rear transmision i pulled out of my 54 Single cab..... bolt it onto my 53 Ragtop bug and and stick the 25 horse back in, then raise the front suspension and use the 16 inch BD wheels all round with off road tyres. it would definately turn heads at shows _________________ Ovalbugbarndoorsinglecabsplitscreencampert4 |

The roof windows on a pre 52 have a deeper recess. The windows sit further into the roof and are not a flush fit like the later style.
Upto 52 (recessed windows):
52 onwards (flush windows):

From what I heard ya that's the bus that Barndoor Dave used to have. I think it had a kubelwagen tranny when Dave had it, and was a seriously rusty bastardised piece of crap, that had been kept on the road in E. Germany by any means possible...and where with bolt ons or weld ons it was not anywhere even close to an original bus. It had one Plexiglas corner window. I saw it when Dave hooked me up with steering parts to improve the Basic Blue 54 kombi what just got repainted. He had a huge stack of parts he was selling with that deluxe. Looked like a deluxe to me. Dave seemed to think it was a 51.
Later I saw the bd deluxe in Havasu...was Lou's, right?... and it was shiny and lowered and had no wiper motor (no holes under windsheilds for pivots, neither) Ronnie, got some before pics of that bus? how about the seat stand area? _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

Have somebody here slammed their Barndoor by using T-1 parts? What must be done? I've been told that you could use T-1 frontspindles too? With the info I've got they appearantly makes the track narrower.
Could some one confirm that it could be done?
Yes, I did a search and this is what I came up with about BD:s from 339 hits.... The rest was about later splits...
Lowering Barndoors

in the interest of stopping the spread of mis-information i offer the following:
keep in mind, this is what i have seen from friends, i like mine beetle tranny bolts in to BD spring plates and they dont even need to be adjusted (unless you really want it on its nuts). look how the BD reduction bolts up in relation to the axle compared to a 55-67 bus and you will see what i mean. on a bd, the stub axle hangs lower than the spring plate, where on 55-67 the spring plate is even with the stub axle. again, that was the long of saying what was said in the first line: get a swing axle beetle/type 3 drum to drum tranny and bolt it in (with nose cone adapter of course). if you have looked under the front end of a bd the beam bolts up way different than a later bus or a beetle. it would take mass quantities of PBR and some torch/welder nastiness to get another beam in there, in my opinion. the front can be lowered with adjusters or drop spindles. not sure if you can make drop spindles out of original bd spindles, but i do think it seems like a bad idea. you can order early (aka small) link pin spindles and they will bolt up to BD torsion arms, or you can get '63 only spindles which are early link pin and big brakes to increase stopping power. FYI, '63 only can be made with a combo of parts, its not like you have to look for that particular year. wolfgang may even stock them. the problem here is that the tie rod will now be at a bad angle because the bd spindle has the tie rod bolting up high and 55-67 spindles have the tie rod bolting up down low. an 'adapter' to effectively raise the tie rod could be made, and i have seen that, but you would be on your own for that. judging by pictures of the metal work on the bus that shouldnt be beyond your capabilities. would definently need to be beefy, since it is your steering and all. anyways, thats about all i know about lowering BDs. hope it helped. |

Your best bet would be to locate a complete barndoor peam and rear end for the job.
I think if you cut off the front beam bracing that reaches back to the chassis and cut off the two locating brackets (that the bolts go through) from the rear of the beam and locate them like a bug on the front then it should bolt on giving you lots of lift. At the back end it should bolt up with minimal work. Maybe just a nose cone swap. |

I probably have some photos of the 51 wannabe barndoor somewhere, but it would take me years to get around to finding them I suspect. When I first saw it a guy had it at an Arizona Bus Club show in Flagstaff, AZ. It was this pale lime greenish color and was super beat to hell. Even with 6 gallons of Bondo it is amazing that he was able to even make it a good 50 footer. The guy that had it at that time I had never met before and couldn't say that I have seen since. Don't remember where he said he got it, but he did have a nice box of NOS parts with it. Want to say he was asking 5 grand for it, which seemed outrageous for it considering the condition. _________________ Richard
