When I disconnect the plugs to the digital idle stabilizer and plug them into each other, the van won't start. When I plug them back into the digital idle stabilizer, it starts.
What does this tell you? As far as I understand it's supposed to be able to run without the stabilizer connected.
Thanks,

Yes, but I think the two leads must be connected if the stabilzer is bypassed. Yes, you said you did that but I would check and be double darn sure they are truly connected. If they are not really connected then indeed you will have a 'no start'. |

They did click into place and were pushed in as far as I could get them. Also I tried several times. I will go out and make sure I have them snugly fit together though, thanks for the suggestion.
After a little thinking, I wondered if this could be due to my timing being off, and the digital stabilizer correcting the issue so that the van runs. I have no idea if that's likely/possible/etc. What do you think?
UPDATE: I tried again and I had the connections on as far as I could get them to go, and it wouldn't start. Plug into idle stabilizer and it started right up. I also noticed the tach doesn't seem to move with the idle stabilizer disconnected. What does it all mean? |

| Digifant, I'm pretty sure. Any easy way to tell? |

2.1 has digifant.
Don't know where the information came from that when you unplug the connector to the stabilizer you have to connect the two wire together. I just went out to my van and unplug the ISV and left the plug dangling. The van started with a little push on the gas pedal. Of cause now it idle too slow.
If you look at the schematic, the idle stabilizer control unit takes inputs from temp 2, hall sensor, starter, throttle switch, A/C and power steering. It has only two output wires which is connected to the stabilizer valve. The rest of the engine do not know if the ISV is connected or not. _________________ Steve |

Sorry I have a 1.9, so I guess it's digijet.
The Bentley test for the Digital Idle Stabilizer said to unplug the plugs and plug them into each other to test the idle stabilizer. It said if the engine is running rough or misfires, and unplugging the idle stabilizer fixes it, then I have a bad idle stabilizer. Unfortunately they didn't have any mention of what the problem is if the engine won't turn with the idle stabilizer disconnected.
Thanks for everything,
-Zen
UPDATE: I replaced my ICU and now the van starts whether the stabilizer is connected or not. Go figure. Any explanations?
Main thing is it's starting again (for now).
Thanks for everything!

Zentaka,
the ICU meaning the Ignition Control Unit? the ingnition module on the DS firewall by the coil?
anyone else have any insight to the function (and disfunction) of the Idle Stabilizer unit in the 80-85 vanagons?

| It changes the timing to put the idle speed into specs. |
